A Buddhist monk in Udon Thani was arrested on Monday evening after allegedly ordering a small amount of marijuana by mail.

Acting on a tip-off, police arrested Phra Waranyu Mongkolphan, 22, at Wat Pa Luang in Tambon Nakha in Muang Udon Thani.

Plainclothes police were at the temple waiting for a postman to deliver a parcel. Once the monk received it and took it to his living quarters, they moved in and found the parcel contained 90 grams of marijuana.

The package had been sent from Pe Ladloi in Bangkok’s Bang Kwang district.

The monk admitted buying the ganja via Pe Ladloi’s Facebook for Bt1,500. It was his second purchase, he said.

The monk was defrocked and taken to the police station for legal action.
