Those boots are made for … well, erm, walking of course! Chatham Marine’s very British footwear

 

 

I can’t remember whether the title of Nancy Sinatra’s 1966 hit, ‘These boots are made for walking’ ever won an award for ‘Stating the bleeding obvious in a Song title,’ but it deserved to. At least Ol’ Blue Eyes’ darling daughter put footwear front and centre like no other song before or since.

 

I was 12 years old at the time, so I never saw the boots in question. I was transfixed by Nancy’s micro, micro mini-skirt which my father told me at the time was probably illegal and could have got her 10 years on Alcatraz.

 

Fifty years later you can’t walk down a High Street without passing three or four shoe shops. I suppose we’ll need shoe shops for as long as we need feet — unless Brexit goes completely pear shaped and austerity condemns us to go around in our stocking soles.
