Thi Lo Su Waterfall to be reopened on Sunday

By The Nation

The popular Thi Lo Su Waterfall in Tak’s Umphang district will be reopened to tourists on Sunday after it was closed to allow natural regeneration during the rainy season.

When the road to the waterfall was damaged earlier in the rainy season, officials took advantage of the situation to allow the falls to recover from heavy tourist traffic.

Officials of the Umphang Wildlife Sanctuary have advised tourists to use four-wheel-drive vehicles or large pickup trucks for the 26-kilometre drive from the sanctuary’s entrance to the Thi Lo Su Waterfall.

Sedan cars are not recommended, the officials said on Saturday.

Tourists may alternatively take a two hour trip by rubber rafts to the Pha Luad Cliff and walk 11 kilometres to access the waterfall, the officials added.

No matter how I try I can't confirm this news.

I fear it may be a bit of regurgitated news from a year or two before.

I'm talking about access to the campsite for private vehicles. - this involves a 23km on a track only really suitable of 4x4s or high ground clearance vehicles.

Firstly the park isn't normally opened till end of Oct/beginning of November.

For the last 2 seasons - or last season at least, private vehicles were not allowed and those wishing to camp had to transfer all their equipment to the local transporters who would take your stuff up for 2000 to 2500 return.

this may have very lucrative for the local transporters (I they could get the work) but it was a nuisance for local hotels and extremely inconvenient for campers with their own vehicles and many people cancelled their trips.

So if anyone can find a source for this other than the Nation it migt be possible to take this change of policy seriously.

So as I suspected the article is inaccurate....if you think you are going to drive to the campsite, think again. you will be charged 2000to 2500 return to transfer all you stuff to one of the local cartel's vehicles.

I received this email.....today

Hello.

Dear, K. Kitty

Pls kindly see attached file of below.

For the safety of your life and property. On the way to the Thi Lor Su Waterfall. Please follow the rules of Umphang Wildlife Sanctuary by the strict.

Do not drive the car as shown below. You need to rent a car of a co-operative bus to get to the Thi Lor Su Waterfall. You can bring your own car, only if there is a child younger than 4 years old and/or older 65 years old in the car. Because policy of Tak Governor ,he wants the people to have income.

Number of co-operative : 089-8591815, 098-3849267

Best Rgds,

the image depicts vehicles that are not allowed to access the Camp site - which includes pictures of ...

Sedans

sports cars

minivans

Quad bikes

bicycles

motorcycles

notably NOT 4x4 pick ups which somewhat contradicts the message.

the most concerning paragraph for me is......

" Because policy of Tak Governor ,he wants the people to have income" - which seems to back up me belief that this is a monopoly by local businesses"

this seems to indicate that it is a monopoly.

Time to re-open and sell some inflated tickets bearing the special "farang overcharging"....:welcomeani:

Completely inaccurate observation.... the dual pricing goes on in ALL parks - this is quite a different "scam"

what is happening is a monopoly by local drivers.

THis only hits people who turn up in their own vehicle hoping to camp there. Most of these people are Thai - last time I was there was over a new year and I was the only foreigner camping, though there were several hundred people there.

some people come on a package of some kind, but those who have teir own 4x4 and own camping equipment have to load everything onto a local truck to do the last 20 km. (2000 t0 2500baht!!).

my vehicle is a modified 4x4 and is set up for camping - there is no way I could transfer everything I wanted onto another truck and if I did I would have to wait for them before coming back, rather than coming and going when I want.

many (Thai) people who USED to go there would spend a night in Umphang before and after going up to stay at the campsite - this means that Umphand itself as well as the campsite is losing customers all because a few drivers want a monopoly on the last 20 km or so. " Because policy of Tak Governor ,he wants the people to have income".

I think all this is utterly unconscionable

last time I went there I was the only westerner I could see.....this "scam" is aimed at monopolising access to a national treasure. At present it is Thais who are mainly paying the price - either forget your vehicle and pay up to 2500 baht and be at the whim of the transporter or be barred from your own country's largest waterfall.

If anyone actually goes to Ti Lo Su, an update would be appreciated.

I, for one of many, won't  be going anywhere  near the place  until there is  a change of policy.

Can you swim there or just look? Can always swim in pool or beach.

People go into the water at various points. I would imagine this depends on the volume of water at the time.

There is also rafting on the river.

I don't see what you mean by "pool or beach"?
