webfact Posted October 11, 2017 Posted October 11, 2017 Chiang Mai temple seeks donation to help girls By The Nation A Chiang Mai temple which is taking care of about 700 abandoned children and orphans has appealed for urgent donations of sanitary napkins for girls. The Donchan Temple in Moo 2 in Tambon Tha Sala of Muang district said most Buddhist followers do not make merit by giving napkins to monks, so the temple is in urgent need of napkins for the girls aged 12 to 15. A Facebook page, Sangkhom Komna, has posted photos of signs at the temple that appealed for help. In one of the signs, the monks in charge of the children apparently mistook napkins for “Pampers”, saying the temple is in need of “pampers” for girls 12 to 15 years. The sign led to a debate about the temple’s actual needs. Source: http://www.nationmultimedia.com/detail/breakingnews/30329041 -- © Copyright The Nation 2017-10-11
Kasset Tak Posted October 11, 2017 Posted October 11, 2017 The temple could raise money for the children by selling for example amulets... but thanks to the head monk in Bangkok (already with enough money and residing in a wealthy temple), they are banned from doing that! Just look at Wat Yai in Phitsanulok, they lost approximated 300,000 in revenues during the 3 first days of the ban!

If you now extrapolite this figure you can estimate a sum of more than 30 million Baht/year from amulet business alone. Not bad so far for monks ... On the other hand: Less accidents, more lottery winners ... Edited October 11, 2017 by rebo
Lupatria Posted October 11, 2017 Posted October 11, 2017 You need money? Why not try to beg for it here: As part of an ongoing investigation into the alleged embezzlement of more than Bt300 million from state subsidies for 30 temples in recent years, Thai authorities on Wednesday morning searched a house in Bangkok's Taling Chan district linked to the wife of former National Buddhism Office (NBO) director Nopparat Benjawatananan.

And in care by ( horny) monks ? Years ago when living in Chiang Mai a group of us ex-pats used to go over to Wat Don Chan and cook for the kids once a month. Not sure if that still happens. The conditions were pretty basic, in fact very Dickensian. The children were mainly from hill tribes. As for their safety..... this is Thailand so who really knows.
Ruffian Dick Posted October 11, 2017 Posted October 11, 2017 Girls grow into women, and they need supplies. It may be unacceptable for monks to go shopping for these things.
