Booze ban this week?

Featured Replies

Does anyone know if alcohol will be banned any days this week, and if so, when?

yes .... there is an alcohol ban on this week.

Please be respectful and observe.

The Disease Control Department has urged people to refrain from drinking alcoholic drinks for the five days of the Royal Cremation period to make merit for His Majesty the late King Bhumibol Adulyadej.

Doctor Suwannachai Wattanayingcharoenchai, director general of the department, sent a letter to the government’s Public Relations Department asking them to help get out a message discouraging people from drinking from October 25 to 29.

The letter to the PR department’s director general, Lt-General Sansern Kaewkamnerd, suggested the NBT channel run public service announcements discouraging drinking for the period.

Friday newsletter -

Plus Tesco/7/11s and probably others shut in the afternoon......

My local restaurant in Naklua has had official notice from the Banglamung Police not to serve alcohol from 25-27. On 13 they even went into restaurants smelling "coffee" to see if it contained alcohol. One resturant was closed for 30 days for doing so!

There is a big difference between urging people not to drink and banning the sales of alcohol.  Doctor Suwannachai Wattanayingcharoenchai, director general of the The Disease Control Department, is very much anti alcohol so his press release is not surprising.

As topt said, a ban on sales for the 26th, the day of the cremation, was announced by the Pattaya District Chief but the official notice had not gone out by late Friday.  No further bans have been announced as of now.

Why do you think i should observe an alcohol ban?

Yes, is not so helpful, the days would be.

The only day when the sale of alcohol is banned is Oct 26, understandably. The week long suggestion for careful or no alcohol consumption comes from the health nannies who are worried that emotionally affected Thai people could overdo the SangSom. It is not a ban on sales, merely an advisory about over- consumption.

But my cellar is well stocked nevertheless!
