I need to travel up to CR from BKK and was wondering how bad/busy the roads will be on Thursday. Any worse than usual given the sad day and everything that surrounds it?

If you (ever) reach/pass the outer ring (out of Bangkok) I would not expect specific problems.

Now it depends on where you start exactly (?) and which route to the outer ring you take?

At what time do you leave?

Before the cock starts crowing would be my advice.

(OK not in Bangkok )

There will be many roads closed not only around Sanam Luang but also for the endless VIP motorcades in all kind of directions (more than 30 foreign honored state guests and countless Thai VIPs, not to speak of the Royals which traffic will shutdown major routes).

And even the expected heavy incoming traffic might block many intersections.

Some optimism needed.

Ouch

With an early start going through motorway 7 and 9 (eastern ringroad) I would not expect too many problems.

Not wishing to be negative e but expect a lot of traffic on the roads for the long weekend break.

We have just got past one and living in Petchabun the roads have been very busy....and dangerous. Lots of lunatics in too much of a hurry.

Not everybody will be heading for Sanam Luang for the cremation. A he'll of a lot of people will be grabbing the chance to visit family or just have a nice holiday. Lots of folk buying up booze in anticipation of seeing family members.

Expect traffic especially getting away from Bangkok.

Heading to the airport and need to be there at 9am I am also concerned about traffic hopefully it will be quiet but I always expect the worst so will give an extra couple of hours.

The long weekend is just over (21,22,23).

The only public holiday is Thursday 26.

Friday 27 will not be a holiday for (government) office workers/bankers.

It could only be a long weekend on extra leave.

We don't expect any family visitors.

They left yesterday.

Clearly the roads will be full.

I disagree.  Apart from the areas around the funeral location, I think the roads will be very empty as most people stay at home to watch the funeral.

And if they don't stay home they will visit a local ceremony (more than 900 sites countrywide).

The daughter originally had plans to travel to Bangkok with a group of village medical helpers.

I asked "are you serious?".

After a while the idea was dropped and they will just go to the district town.

My guess is that there was pressure via the government offices to keep people away from long travels to Bangkok (as good as possible).

Just think what would happen if millions try to get close to the funeral site.

It took almost a year to let about 12 million (?) people see the Royal coffin.

Maybe you're right. I have to drive from Bangkok to a small village about 20km from Chachoengsao on Thursday and I'm predicting it will be easier than normal. I use the Chonburi 7 out of and back into Bangkok. I'll be astonished if it's busier than normal and I expect traffic to be lighter.

As others have said, most cities and towns will have their own event and if the local thoroughfare goes anywhere near the local event expect traffic or detours. My wife has us going to the event in Pattaya at the big temple in Pattaya tai, and pattaya tai will apparently be closed with buses delivering people from car parks at big C, lotus etc.

Judging from the traffic, and looking at what's open in Udon Thani doing the morning school run I think tomorrows traffic will be dead

The whole country is going to shut down tomorrow

Just been out to buy a few beers and the roads locally are quiet, but  Mrs.Trans   says in town it is packed with parked cars at  today's events..
