The government has said that the 100 billion baht Chiang Mai tram project will be open for tenders next year.

The joint government and private sector project is in the planning stage with the communications ministry conducting environmental impact studies over the next 4-6 months.

Thereafter the private sector will be asked to get involved on operational aspects of the tram way.

The government is providing much of the budget for the main building infrastructure.

In addition the private sector is being urged to get involved in providing services at and around the stations and maintenance yard that will be main features of the massive project valued in total at 100 million baht, reported Daily News.

What will cost 100 billion (first line) And 100 million (last line) ?

Thai journalism at its best or this is 2 different things ?

Expropriation ??

Major shopping complexes and high end business is in the way of most of the proposed plans I have seen. It's going to be another "tunnel through the mountains" to Pai and not likely to happen any time soon.

Wonderful!! Where exactly are they going to find the room to run the tracks?

In UK the trams share the roads with regular traffic, but probably not possible here with the state of anarchy that exists!

In the centre of town, they'll probably fill in the moat & call that "progress" :(

a stupid idea. Everybody who lives in CM will laugh. For trams there is no space. The only way to manage the traffic jams might be a sky train similar to BKK

Are "trams" the same as "light rail"? Change of plans or bad translation?

BTW, if there is room for traffic jams, then there is room for mass transit. It's just that the years of construction will be... interesting.
