Miss Grand International contestants raise a sky lantern September 2014 in Sukhothai province.

BANGKOK — Festivities for Friday’s Loy Krathong will be low-key with the usual fireworks, sparklers and sky lanterns prohibited.

Bangkok Gov. Aswin Kwanmuang said Monday that only “polite celebrations” can be organized for this year’s festival, which comes just days after mourning for King Rama IX ended. Anyone who ignites fireworks, sparklers or other prohibited items face up to three years in prison and a 60,000 baht fine.

Sparklers!

The irresponsibility of it all, throw them in gaol.

This should be interesting all the hotels along the river have advertised watching the fireworks

I had thought the Government had declared the period of mourning to be over on the dedication of King Rama IX's ashes by King Rama X?

The corrections department is likely to be bursting at the seams!

Over fifty flight have been cancelled in Chaing mai to allow the floating lanterns as usual. So no ban here .After all the mourning period has ended .

They just announced in other news that mourning period is over. Facepalm

Egomaniacal decision by Bangkok governor?

I mean, sometime it must be over.

Will he order low-key Songkran?

On the contrary!! Songkran will be held after The major socio-political Thai event in December.  All subsequent festivals are ordered to be overly joyous.

Dont expect the normal in thailand, its always something unique you will see and face.

A bit short notice!  Will they let everybody know by smoke signals, or is it just another plan to fill the party collection box!

Why not cancel Songkran while they're at it; might save a few thousand lives.
