Current requirements in CM for new motorcycle licnese

Hi all.

I had thought about putting this in the motorcycle forum but it really local to CM.

I have someone arriving tomorrow who wants to buy one of my bikes. I am advising him that getting a Thai driving license will save him a good bit of aggravation.

When I arrived here about 7 years ago, I came with my US driver's license with motorcycle endorsement plus an International Driving Permit (IDP). I got both my car and motorcycle license at the same time. I still have the original IDP so if they asked for it, they did not keep the original and in all honesty, I don['t remember them asking for it.

So the question is, if you have a driver's license that is in English (US, GB, etc,) do you need an IDP to apply for your initial license?

Comments from someone with recent experience would be appreciated.

You will need information of the License from your country Car Motor Bike etc

Unless its a IDP

Resident certificate to state you live here Have fun getting One at Immigration

A Medical report

Copy of passport pages

The rest is easy when you get there

But things might have changed from last year when i got mine

I got my motorcyle cycle license by showing my home county license. It uses G for car and M for motorcycle.

They just wanted a description of them. So went to a local shop to use their computer and printed off the decription from my home licence office for them. They were fine with that. Only test I had was reaction time and color test.

As long as your licence is in Englsh then normally an IDP s not requred.  I too printed off from my home country website what the codes meant on my NZ licence.

Very painless procedure...apart from the Residence Certificate at immigration. Did all the business out at Mae Tang as it was closer to my place in Mae Rim. Complete process in less than an hour.  Unfortunately it doesnt stop the BiB pulling you over at these 'random' checkpoints.  Just make sure your vehicle has current road tax and you have a copy of the green book handy.  If everything is in order then its hard for them to try and 'extort' funds from you...just sayin.

I didn't need anything from country of issue for my overseas driving licence.

No need for IDP.

I did need proof of residence in Thailand though, plus medical and had to do part of the driving test.

In the past, if you did not have an IDP, you had to do the driving test.  If you had a valid IDP, you did not have to do the driving test.

As always, things are not "always" the same.

Not quite correct

I had a Australian License

No Driving Or Motor Bike test Actually Have Truck License

just the Colour Lights Test

It May be because of different Countries they do the test

Anything goes these day  No Consistency

lizard,

That is why my post ends with, "As always, things are not "always" the same. "  That is saying the same thing as your, "Anything goes these day  No Consistency ".

I am absolutely sure it has been that way FOR SOME PEOPLE in the past.... As was for me when I got my original Thai driving license.  At the time I got my first license things were much more consistent.
