"Roofed only" Tiled Surface for 4 W Vehicle ; 1st Blocks laid flat ; 2nd "Non-Marine" Plywood Sheets surfaced with Tiles ?

Hi Fellow Thaivisa.com Posters,

Here is hoping for the usual helpful responses :

Objective ;

Sound floor surface upon semi-compact ground to

support 4 wheeled vehicle & more

have tiled surface

.................................................................................................................................

I wish to minimise my expenditure yet achieve good result

...................................................................................................................................

If possible, I wish that solution to semi-compact ground above allows for easy dismantling later for purposes of :

redevelopment of its location

redeployment at different location

I plan also for :

adjacent "roofed-only"  concrete floor that is actually abutting the house  to be tiled ;

all tiled surfaces forming continuous even surface with each other.

/////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////

Situation ;

Not my property

Sound tiled surface would be very welcome by the owner though.

Hard rain penetrates from open sides into the compact ground area

 ////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////

My Proposal ;

1_

Excavation

Excavate accordingly for :

sub-surface #1 of concrete blocks laid flat

+

sub-surface #2 of non-plywood sheets

+

surface # 3 of tiles

...........................................................................................................................................

2_

Bed of Concrete Blocks

Lay bed of Concrete Blocks

2_a

on bed of mortar ?

or

2_b

not on bed of mortar ?

2_c

mortared together ?

or

2_d

not mortared together ?

..............................................................................................................................................................

3_

Non-marine Plywood Sheets

Sheets of non-marine plywood treated, as recommended by knowledgeable persons, sufficient to perform successfully thus ;

3_1

laid on the bed of concrete blocks

3_2

secured by "galvanized" or "stainless-steel [ s/s ]" masonry anchors into the bed of concrete blocks

Note ;

Sheets are positioned with expansion gap between adjacent each other to be filled with water proof sealer

...............................................................................................................................................................

4_

Tiled Surface

Tiles laid thus :

4_1

to edge of each sheet of non-marine plywood ?

or

4_2

overlapping each sheet of plywood according as the pattern of tiles dictate ?

................................................................................................................................................................

5_

Adhesive for tiles :

5_1

a rubber mastic cement that allows for :

5_1_1

easy removal -- through use of solvent ? -- from non-marine plywood

&

5_1_2

easy cleaning -- through use of solvent ? -- of from underside of tile

5_2

a non-rubber cement

/////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////

Addendum ;

X_

I think that it may be wise to lay :

X_1

shallow level of sand on base excavation

X_2

sheet of damp-course membrane over the sand

/////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////

Thanking u in advance for all ur positive constructive replies,

"Roofed only" Tiled Surface for 4 W Vehicle ; 1st Blocks laid flat with no Mortar ; 2nd "Non-Marine" Plywood Sheets surfaced with Tiles ?

I assume your "roofed only area" is what we would call a "car port" :smile:

I can't help thinking that you are over-thinking this job.

Anything even remotely flexible will move when the semi-compact ground becomes more compact when you park the car on it leading to cracked tiles.

Do you REALLY want to rip it out and take it with you? Don't forget you will need to restore the surface to its original state.

Taking a pragmatic approach the simplest solution would be a 150mm (6") concrete slab, tiled if you want. Easy, quick, reasonably cheap and the local labour know how to do it.

Make your landlord happy, he may even help with the cost (ok I can dream) :smile:

EDIT Our car port has a floor of compacted gravel (the same stuff used for dirt roads), the car is quite happy parking on it.

I doubt that the landlord would allow you to rip it out and take it with you, most leases have a clause that basically say that any "improvements" become the property of the landlord when you leave.  I think that Crossy's idea is best and I wouldn't put tile on a carport that is always going to get wet when it rains!

When I lived in Samui I had a friend that lived in a small house on stilts.  He enclosed the area below the house with premade screen panels that could be removed and installed a kitchen and lounge area.  When he moved, he tried to dismantle it and take it with him but the landlord and the BIB had a different opinion of who owed it!  Needless to say it stayed where it was.

Clarifications :

Not landlord that owns the place.

Rather, the owners are the parents of my Thai lady.

I wish for my kid to have as much tiled [ perhaps ]  play area as possible ;

When vehicle away, he can play also on the vacated place.

Yes, series of roofs with open sides & having motorised vehicles underneath ==> any part could be "car-port".

My proposal to fix the plywood to the blocks would not make the sheets secure ?

I am aware of tiles been cemented to wooden floors as success.

At least for domestic use ; incl. "not" having heavy vehicles on them.

Bricks versus Concrete Slab

Cost ?

Overall, on a sliding scale of "best" to "least best" ;

What are my options for appropriate surfaces ?

Anyway, I had grave doubts about non-marine plywood performing for this project ;

e.g.

Moisture penetration

1_

Do u recommend that there be any special features ? :

e.g.s

1_1

damp-proof course  ;

Sheet of suitable damp proof membrane between shallow bed of sand & top layer of concrete ? ;

Just in case some one wants to live on that space later.

1_2

mesh of galvanized / zinc-plated steel supported at bottom 50mm [ 2" ] level of concrete, & then continue the pour of concrete ?

..........................................................................................................................................

I might do paving on further-out  "car port" surface.

It would more easily allow surface to be altered later for to excavate to form a mechanic's pit.

2_

What would be cheapest good paving option ?

If you want a liveable space on a slab laid directly on the ground include a damp proof membrane.

Yes, use a reinforcing mesh, plain steel is fine (get it from any builder's merchant) I think we used 4" or 6" (can't check it's in the concrete).

Bought some last year. Think it was from Thai wadasadu. Remember it wasnt cheap 2400 baht for a 2.4 x 1.2 m sheet.
