Giving birth in Thailand, and what gonna happened if cannot pay the hospital fee ?

Hello, me ( foreigner ) and my Filipina girlfriend we planned to leave to my country in EU and marriage, but the problem, until now I can't receive a recent birth certificate etc, it suck on my city office,etc,... so I can't process marriage here in Bangkok

We've no choice to giving birth here, in Thailand. But I read it can have many surprises, exemple even if I've available the 50,000 THB for the birth it can have more complications and will explose the bill..

I just wonder if ever we can't pay all the amount. Do they will keep the Thai birth certificate, or don't allow us to leave Thailand ? What can happened.

The general practice seems to be that the hospital keeps the patient hostage until the bill is fully paid or a compromise is reached, and in the meantime the bill will get bigger and bigger.

Can your friend not fly to the Philippines and give birth there?

No, it be very complicated for her to leave again the Philippines, if she go back there. They've so strict rules about Filipinos leave their country. Before, we leaved, we sign many documents, etc that she gonna stay 2 weeks in Thailand.. if she try to leave again they will certainly don't accept

30 000 Baht is about the going rate for a birth in a private hospital in Thailand , you could go to a local hospital and pay them, which I believe is about 7000 Baht

Your best option is for her to return to the Philippines. Going into a hospital knowing you can't pay is a bad choice, and it will only get worse as time goes on.

And yes, they may withhold the birth certificate. Without that your child will not be able to get a passport and leave the country.

Marry her , problem solved.

My suggestion is: let your girlfriend have her baby in a government hospital, you will receive a very moderate bill. 95% of Thai nationals are born in a Thai government hospital. Where are you located? I'm diabetic since about 11 years. The best doctor which was able to really help me to get me to a normal glucose level is a young Thai doctor in a government hospital in rural Thailand!

Hello Dario, thanks at least have some human people here, instead of some sarcastic without once of humanity.

I am located in Lat Krabang BKK. I saw list of Thai hospital like Siriraj, Ramkhameng, but it's not government hospital ?! I see on the website some reviews they make it need to pay around 30,000 the minimum for a classic delivery.

I wish to find a Govt Hospital ! thx! :)

Bingo.

Getting a passport for the baby could take a month or longer which could cause you to overstay in thailand.

Easy and best solution is to leave thailand asap and have baby in the Phillipines.

Would a private hospital even accept a patient (unless in an emergency) without advance paiement or sufficient guarantees?

Thanks, we went to the Bangkok Christian Hospital, nice doctor and good ultrasound, but I saw the package is start 49,900 at classic and C- 89;900

We went first time at the Pramuntgklao near Phaya-Thai Ratchatewi, I guess it's public, but so hard to speak with them, they don't speak English, we get 1 consultation before.. maybe we should go there again

Yep...   We were only presented with a Bill upon checking out....

Labour Room, Medically elective C-Section, 4 nights stay in a regular hospital room at Bumrungrad.

Insurance paid for all (BUPA International).

Edit: come to think if it we had to obtain pre-authorization from BUPA who probably contacted the hospital.

.Hmmm

Out on a "world wide trip" and with a slim budget!?!

Well my daughters birth was 66.000Thb.

You probably have to pay, it's not a huge amount of money if you don't need some really special care

I didn't read it as "they will be here for two weeks" but "they left the Philippines saying it would be only two weeks and it has been well more, so if she goes back now, Immigration will never believe another word they say"?

Why don't you try Mission Hospital on Phitsanalok road. It's affiliated with seventh day adventists and is private but non-profit so prices should be lower than BCH.

Daniel, it shouldn't be difficult to find a government hospital in Lat Krabang, there surely is at least one. The best place to find out is at the municipal office (amphur in Thai) of Lat Krabang. They know for sure where the hopital is. A person who could help you in this forum is moderator Sheryl. I will drop her a private message. I think for the cost at a government hospital you're loking at less than 10'000 Baht, probably 6-8'000, this is only a guess.

PS: I've already sent a message to Sheryl.

What an intelligent comment.

Is this the level of your other 4878 posts?

Do you really think you can leave the hospital with your passport , birth certificate, wife and baby without paying?

Maybe you should read all my posts, you could learn something.

Yes, leaving the Philippines is really hard for a Filipina, we should lie, if not they got easily offloaded, at first they're so suspicious, right, we came to Thailand, without to get any benefits, or make any kind of work, I've a disability allowance, which is just enough to live normal, as we never know what will happened during the delivery, I can't except to pay a so big suprise amount as we have other expenses. I don't want she back to Philippines, we will just manage her visa, we gonna apply a new tourist-visa in Phnom Penh, then it gonna cover the stay during the baby born.. so, if ever we don't get the passport of the kid faster, she will do a visa-run trip, and then extend it. During that day, I'll be near of the kid, and vice-versa, the next day.. We will don't be in overstay.

A number of inappropriate/unhelpful posts have been removed and thread moved to the Health Forum.

OP as I think you have gathered by now, delivering in a private hospital where you cannot afford the fee is not a viable option (and will be catastrophic for you if there are any complications).

The advice to deliver in a government hospital is sound. There are  X government hospitals in Bangkok; Pramongkutklao   which you already went to is one, but not very close to where you live.

Near Lat Krabang I suggest you check out:

Sirindhorn Hospital

20 Soi On Nut 90, Khwaeng Prawet, Khet Prawet, Krung Thep Maha Nakhon 10250

sirindhornhosp.go.th

02 328 6901

Language will be a problem, no question, but you really don’t have a choice here.

Cost for a normal delivery should be under 10,000 baht and unlike private hospitals, caesearean section will not be done unless really necessary.

However even in a government hospital costs will run quite high if there are serious complications, i..e as much as 1 million baht. 5 times that in a government hospital. This is something to think seriously about as you decide what to do because there is no way in advance to know if such an emergency will arise or not.

If I recall corectly my wife had a C section and it cost 5000bt. Not a private hospital but she had a private room and a day bed in it so I could get some shut eye.

The child of me and my girlfriend was also born in a government hospital and quality wise it was fine. I can't remember the exact price, but I believe it was a little bit below 5.000 Baht. This hospital is situated in Fang, a city halfway between Chiang Mai and Chiang Rai. Our baby was born with a caesar's cut (too big to be born naturally).

But it's not very comfortable. For example in the hospital we were, all expecting woman and woman who already gave birth were in a big room. So you'd hear lots of crying babies and the like. Men would sleep on the floor next to the bed of their wives / girlfriends. Children might sleep there as well. No airco available, only fans. No showers available for men either (only for the woman). We made use of this big room for 2 nights. I just rented a room in a nearby hotel for showers which cost me about 400 Baht / day.

We were lucky enough to have some people help us get a VIP-room for a few days. Not that expensive and a much better experience, for example the VIP room had a private shower, some dedicated nurses and airco. I believe the VIP room cost us about 1500 Baht a day or so.
