A man who attacked a woman in Tha Ton, Chiang Mai, and left her for dead made off with 40 baht from the victim, police said.

Sitthichoke, 23, a former soldier just out of prison, has been charged with attempted murder. He may also be charged with rape.

Nawai, 28, his victim described as a homeless woman, was left with ten serious wounds to her head, left hand and body after the attack at a secluded room in the Suan Thammakosol area of Tha Ton, Mae Ai.

An earlier report suggested the victim's hand and fingers were almost severed and he believed she was dead.

The knife man was soon arrested following Thursday's attack as police had witness and victim statements and CCTV footage to go on.

Region 5 police chief Phoonsap Prasertsak said after the initial investigation that Sitthichoke admitted approaching Nawai as she walked along the road. He took her on his PCX motorcycle to a place he knew before and where he knew he would not be disturbed.

After sex she asked him for money but he wanted money from her. He went to his motorcycle and retrieved a knife and attacked her.

He stole 40 baht.

The attacker claimed it was not rape but consensual sex. Phoonsap said rape would be added to the rap sheet later when the victim has been interviewed again.

Sitthichoke is a former army recruit who has been in jail three times already on drug offences. He had just got out of prison when he committed the attack.

He obviously got sentences that were, in no way or form a deterrent.

Maybe time to make changes ?

The attacker says it was consensual. He has been interviewed.
The police say that rape would be added to the rap sheet later. If not added after the first interview, how can they know it´s going to be added after the second that has not been done yet?

I also believe it was rape too, but the police is drawing their own conclusions without facts.
