Chiang Mai traffic cops getting drunk "will be dealt with"

Police in Chiang Mai said they take drinking on duty very seriously and will deal with two policemen photographed boozing on duty.

Pictures of two men surrounded by jugs and bottles of what appeared to be beer were all over the internet at the weekend.

The men had just been escorting a convoy of tourists on tuk-tuks around town, reported Sanook.

The Chiang Mai police page responded by issuing a statement that they were indeed cops under their command.

They have been transferred to base following an initial investigation.

They will be asked to explain matters and if guilty will be punished according to the regulations.

The statement said that Chiang Mai police expect exemplary behavior of their officers.

The men had just been escorting a convoy of tourists on tuk-tuks around town...... and now it was time for an afterwork beer. What's wrong with that?

Should have ditched the uniforms (and I'm assuming, their sidearms) before partaking in Miller time.

You cannot do anything now, without someone taking a picture

and posting it on social media, expect they will say it was only

water.

The cops were probably "off duty" when they escorted the convoy of tuk-tuks around town, being paid by the tour company.  They probably ended up at the same restaurant as the tourists where they were treated to a nice meal with a few, but not many beers, just like the tourists.

Or, maybe I'm wrong, and it's standard practice for the local police to serve as escorts for private tour companies while on duty.  And to eat a meal with them (or rather at the same restaurant, but probably talking the with Thai tour operators) while on duty.  I don't think so.

The guys just happened to be enjoying a few beers while still in uniform.  To me, it's like the time when as an elementary school kid, I was in a local restaurant/pub with my family and saw my teacher knocking back a few with friends -- nothing too rowdy.  I was astonished that my teacher would drink or smoke in public.

Doesn't appear that way.

Nancy, you appear to have extensive experience of immigration police. However I don't know how you can assume they weren't drink driving. Drink driving is endemic amongst police. I have witnessed it so many times. I would bet a pound to penny they were well over the limit and certainly did not have a designated driver. :burp:

If you have agreed to "boys in brown"  on-the-spot fine for some minor infraction, like not having the proper helmet  or proper license for the vehicle you are driving, i.e. small caliper motorscooter, then you shouldn't be contributing to this thread.

Yes, for once, I'm defending the boys-in-brown.  These are the ground troops not the big guys able to work the big game.  Let's let them have their "free" meal and a couple beers after escorting a tuk tuk parade around the Old City.  It's really very innocent.

Why is the emphasis on these cops drinking on duty? Why isn't it on catching the person who took the picture? That's the real crime here; making bad/stupid people look bad.
