My daughter smashed her screen so nothing is viewable on screen but the devices still is recognized by windows, she wants her images off the phone however when you plug the phone into the PC the internal storage is blank. The reason for this is the idiots at Android default to charging only mode when plugged into a PC, you have to manually select from the notification menu to change it to MTP mode (the mode needed to access your files) Of course as i cannot see the screen i cannot change the mode.

So my question is any other high level android users here who know a way around this, unfortunately i dont have USB debugging mode turned on either so i cannot use ADB commands.

Any ideas?

are any screens interchangable ?   could a phone shop pop off the dead screen , plug in another screen ( not same model) so you can use the touch and set it to USB  debugging ?

I also need something like that done to a Nexus 5 that has a cracked screen where only 25% works.....

Nice idea but wouldnt work, the screens are specific to the model with all the connectors etc.

Im not sure why android decided to do this i would of thought its an obvious thing to default to mtp.

If its a samsung, (maybe other brands) you can buy a phone to HDMI cable, the phone screen appears on tv screen.  I have used it to get stuff off a dead screen samsung, so long as the screen still recognises finger touch etc.

Maybe Apple is not the work of the devil after all.

Vey frustrating turn of events. I concur with the HDMI option having done this myself.

Please let us know how it goes for you.

Are the pics on the phone's internal memory or a plugin memory card? If the latter, just put the card in another device...

What make and model is the phone with damaged screen?

Screens of 1 year and older models can be cheap, few yesrs back I had similar issue with Sony Z1, I found a replacement LCD on Ebay for $19 USD, free shipping from China, shipping took over a month, but if in hurry you can aleays choose EMS, and you'll have the screen in 5 days.

I replaced the screen myself, but usual cost of lcd replacement is around 1000 - 2000 baht.

Some popular phone screens are in stock at MBK phone repair shops, worth taking a look.

This, of course, requires that you have myphoneexplorer installed on the phone, have it properly configured and are able to connect it to the same network running MPE on a PC.

What is the exact make/model?

You may be able to put the phone into Recovery mode (remove/reinstall battery if you can), then use the proper key combination for your make/model (often simultaneous pressing of power, volume up or down and Home). Then connect the phone to a PC using a USB cable, and you may be able to see/copy any/all data on the phone.

Can't you set your Google or Samsung account to back up the images? Not sure if you can change those setting by logging on from a PC or another Android device.

You may even find they're already backed up...

The tablet is just an 4k Acer tablet, there are some good ideas, the phoneexplorer one is good but as another post you need the app installed in the first place.

I think the options are to get a HDMI cable and plug into the TV then copy the pics (they are on internal memory) onto an SD card or turn on USB mode and plug into PC and start tablet in recovery mode and then if the folders come up in recovery mode copy to phone.

A pain in the arse to say the least why you cannot default it to MTP mode when plugged in Ill never know.

I think Apple would be juts as bad aswell because you would need to enter your password and that would mean guessing where the keys are if the screen was working.

I think one thing for the future is to make sure all images and videos are automatically saved onto SD card.
