A taxi driver apparently under the influence alcohol was arrested near an expressway entrance after he hit a motorcycle and fled the scene, prompting good-Samaritan taxi motorcyclists to chase after his cab.

During his attempt to flee, Sakchai Nomrawee, 49, fired one shot from a .38 revolver at the three motorcyclists pursuing him.

Sakchai was arrested after his taxi hit the pavement while he was trying to enter the Rama II entrance to the expressway in Bangkok’s Jomthong district, causing the vehicle’s front left tyre to burst.

He was arrested at 10am after he climbed over the fence of the expressway and tried to hail another cab. Police arrived at the scene shortly after the Ratburana police station was alerted of the hit-and-run and shooting incident at 9.30am.

Police found a .38 revolver in his car with 14 rounds of ammunition and a spent shell.

Pol Major Gen Samrit Tongtao, commander of the Metropolitan Police Division 8, said police were informed that a taxi driver appeared very drunk and his taxi had hit a motorcycle belonging to Wannisa Kadprasit on Soi Suksaswat 38, causing her son, Pornprasit Kadprasit, to suffer a head injury.

The taxi sped off from the soi towards the Rama II road, prompting the three taxi motorcyclists, who witnessed the incident, to give chase. Samrit said Sakchai fired his gun once at the motorcyclists, who were closing in on him, but nobody was hit.

Should publish this fact on tour brochures. Let travelers weigh the risks and decide.

It would be more newsworthy to find an unarmed one.

The drunk driving / hit and run would have gotten him a wrist slap.  The weapon's charge is going to put him in jail.  What a moron!

Probably no jail time, nobody was hit. That precedent has already been set. Thais can fire off random shots in public with no prosecution unless somebody stops a piece of lead. And if it is a dog, that is certain jail time.

Simply a country filled with angry lunatics who require some serious medication

<deleted>!....John Wayne never had this type of trouble....nobody's going to believe this back home!

Except that in this case the shot was a deliberate shot at pursuers, not "random" [sic].

Only the drunk ones.

You base that assertion on what?

For a little over 16 years, I took a taxi going to and from work in Bangkok. Generally, I would take the first taxi that I managed to flag down.  I met former bankers, Issan farmers, police, teachers, taxi owners and the list goes on. One former driver now owns a 5-Star Chicken shop which I stop in from time to time. Mostly, decent people. However, there have been some crazies and a couple of heated discussions. One 'hyper' driver got aggravated with the AC control and jumped out of the cab and started beating the hood. Luckily, we were in a traffic snarl on Rama lV. I left enough money for the fare and got another ride. Most of the heated debates have been about faulty meters in which both the driver and I knew what was going on.

I have plenty of stories about taking a taxi, but 90% of the rides were a breeze. Experience has taught me, that most have protection of some sort...

I'm not sure the taxi driver actually aimed at or shot at the motor-taxi following him. That is because the empty bullet casing was found inside the cab. I think to shoot at or towards the chasing motorbikes then he'd have to stick the gun outside the cab window and fire, in which case the casing is unlikely to eject into the inside of the cab.

We assume the ones accusing the cab driver of firing the gun are 3 guys wanting to big themselves up, embellish their story as it were.

You want to know?   Why?

The report says it was a revolver.

I suspect many have already been self medicating, but as the Fish stated, not only here in LOS.

But you have nothing whatsoever to back up your assertion that "armed taxi drivers are common in Bangkok".

Clearly I wasn't asking you so why do you ask?    I asked him because I was curious about his assertion that was, very obviously, something that he could not substantiate.

And if the roof is all over the country, you will still think that some people reside outside. I just got an alien re-incarnation, boy!

It's part of the new marketing campaign. Rest assured that the reforms have been prudent over 3 years and Thailand has delivered on its promise. Guns are standard issue. But please don't talk elections.

Maybe the Chinese enjoy gun fire.

Classic. Rolled around on the floor pi*^ing myself when I read this one. Wish it had been filmed.

And you took that right out of your imagination? Very stupid!
