Critter identification

Featured Replies

Is this a centipede?  Thais call it a  ตะฃาบ ("ta-khap") with 100,000 feet  แสนตีน  ("saen teen").

Any specific English-language name for this 40-legged one?  Venomous?

Any suggestions to control in garden / prevent entering my house?

Thanks!

Its a Centipede, with a very painful bite,no easy way to control them,

and it seems like your house would have to be  airtight,as we have

had them in our house and no idea how they get in,one must have

been 12 ", they are not so common, and do good eating cockroaches,

and other insects,

regards Worgeordie

Wait till you see a big one. :shock1:

I don't know of any way to prevent them aside from what Geordie suggested

For the first time in 11 years we have had them inside the house - twice last week. We always have them in the garden but no idea how they got inside. As big as the one in your photo.

Only not toxic way I know to control is having a few chickens scratching around eating them.

They are nasty bastards. Very quick too and inflict a very painful bite.  Also known as a Vietnamese Red centipede.

Do not let kids play with them....I give them a wide berth or a good whack with a stick.

Millipedes however are very placid and harmless. Thais however do not like millipedes at all...which is a bit weird I think. It's the centipedes that can do you harm.

Although as with most animals/insects if you leave them alone they will do likewise.

^^^ ...as with snakes it is rare to be bitten by the ones you see, I have been bitten many times, they hide in shoes, work gloves...  even bitten on 2 occasions while asleep:shock1:

I had one about 10 inches crawl over my legs while asleep. Thought I was dreaming so went back to sleep. In the morning as I stood up it fell out on the floor. Tiny ex wife body checked me out of the way and in a flash had chopped it to pieces. Thais really don't like them.
