Hi,

We are due to have a baby born in Nong Khai mid-Feb.

Does anyone know of real cost for Government hospital?

Can't-do private !! UGH !!

Also is their anywhere Thais go to obtain second-hand goods?

I know don't have one if you can't afford. However, sometimes life throws a curve ball least when expected but a least this one is very wanted. I still young so will be here to bring up fully, unlike most.

What do Thai's do if not have money to pay for Hospital? Surely they not left on the street?

Any advice welcome.

Thais registered in their home province hospital I believe can avail themselves of care for 30 baht. BUt not sure if that covers Childbirth or just complications from birth.

Thai citizens = free care for everything including pre-natal care, delivery, post-natal care, any complications etc.

However need to get care at the hospital where she is registered, which is based on tabian ban registration.

If she is currently listed in a tabian ban in a location far from where you live it is worth getting that changed.

Does she have a friend or relative that has a house book in Nong Khai? With permission from them she could be registered in it. Easy solution to the problem.

Is that easy to do and how long does it take?

A few hours at at the Amphoe where the house book she will be in is for.

No they will not. People do it all the time.

I paid our landlady 1,000bht to register my wife in her house book.

Took them all along to the Amphur office, 15 minutes and a couple of forms later, registered in a local house book.

Went along to the Hospital and registered the wife there, had to show the house book, returned it to landlady after.

Total pregnancy and delivery cost 250bht, because they wouldn't do my blood tests for free.

Little old ladies are very helpful for 1,000bht, just ask one or two living near you.

Just thought (omg a farang thinks? )
What if we book a private room will just the room be charged?

Yes. The rest will be psid for under the universal health scheme.

There is nothing "ulterior" about changing a tabian ban listing to where you actually live, in fact that is what one is supposed to do. And while it can then be undone you are best advised not to unless you move back to where she used to live. There is also the health care of the baby to consider as the baby too will be registered in a tabian ban and need to access care accordingly.

The reason one can't just use the system nationally is that it would result in an unmanageable number of patients in some facilities and under utilization in others. Also the number of people registered at each hospital is used to determine the annual funding the government provides.

Most national health services operate on similar lines.

Had our child in a gov hospital.  The birth was in a room of 5-6 other pregnant women. After the birth we spent two days in a private room which cost 1000 per day.

If given the option on that hospital again. I'd have declined but I think it really is just a bad one and perhaps others are better. Nong khai being an enter/exit point in NE Thailand, maybe they put more effort in than the one we had.
