Police and soldiers swooped on a well known bar on Koh Pangan yesterday and found magic mushroom punch on sale as well as nitrous oxide in balloons.

Out back at the Bello Bar the 3am raiders found a total of 50 liters of "het khii kwai" (magic mushrooms) mixed with fruit juice in three eskies.

There was also three large canisters of the gas known as laughing gas.

There were more than 100 patrons enjoying the countdown party at the Hat Rin beach venue when the police arrived using Article 44 powers, reported Thai Rath.

The incriminating substances and 3,000 balloons were taken into evidence along with 1,510,100 baht in cash from the register table.

Taken away were owner Duangrudee "Noi" Sae-lim, 38 and two other men at the bar Charnchai Buakham, 44, and Khamnuan Somsuk, 59.

Noi admitted selling magic mushrooms mixed with fruit juice for 300 baht a glass as well as balloons of laughing gas for 150-200 baht a time.

Charges of possessing and selling Class 5 drugs (magic mushrooms) and distributing nitrous oxide were laid.

Het Khii Kwai (literally buffalo dung mushrooms) give the user a trip lasting many hours.

They've learned fast from their boss. It's only about the money, nothing else.

Why would anybody leave so much cash in the register?

Who cares about some stupid farang bah stuff? .

How dare they !!! Magic mushrooms, along with 1,510,100 baht in cash from the register table, what were they thinking "as well as nitrous oxide in balloons.

Like it they raided at 3am.....most would have been wasted by then.....but of course, there apparently was plenty of cash to steal at that time.....which has no doubt come in very handy for goody stars from their boss!

It is so shameful and disgusting that young people come to Thailand to do this. Bark, howl at the moon some ending up in coolers dead! This is the world image of sex, and this insane behavior that is disgraceful! Unholy and it is about greed!

Had the so called laughing gas once at the dentist. Almost made me pass out so she froze my mouth instead.

The funniest laughing gas scene was in a Peter Sellers movie. Just hilarious.

I am amazed that  people do not appreciate that nitrous oxide  has side effects, some of which are serious.  The substance blocks oxygen and if not administered in a controlled and monitored manner will cause brain and vital organ damage. Paralysis and other nerve damage  has been  documented.

Worse, is the assumption that this gas was clean. Who knows how this was sourced.  To those who are dismissing this as harmless youthful hijinks, I ask if you would allow   nitric oxide, a common contaminant in nitrous oxide. To quote one  meta review;

Poisoning was characterized by the onset of cyanosis after a few minutes of inhalation of the nitrous oxide and rapid circulatory collapse with marked hypotension. This was followed some hours later by respiratory difficulty with pulmonary cedema.

Good on the police for doing this and  hopefully, the organizers are charged with the maximum offenses possible.  Irresponsible selfish idiots who didn't care if they poisoned and injured people.

Did you not yet realise that they really don't care how many of these Farangs have to leave the planet, or get seriously sick? None of the overdosed actually died because of drugs.

You can't take something that doesn't exist in LOS, can you?

Clearly never experienced psychedelics.

But I concur that the bar's motivation was profit.

Arguably doing the raid prior to everyone getting wasted, would have been better and more responsible, thereby stopping consumption of illegal drugs.... but then there wouldn’t have been 1.5 million baht to “confiscate”

? that could make one wonder, no?

You shouldn't use past tense. After that, you'll never hear anything more coming from that establishment.

The 31th, 1st and other days it's okay to use white envelopes, especially when you need to bribe a school director, etc..!!

Yes, military order.

Local police is controlling the trade.

And they always told me that they'd protect us from the bad dealers.

about 20 years ago i was on one of the quieter beaches in phangan staying in shitty cheap ass bungalows and there was a young english couple, around my age at the time and they had mushroom omelettes i think it was. watching them talk was entertaining, they were completey smashed talking about the moon and stars and stuff. anyway, the guy wonders off into the woods and i thought he was going to the toilet. 2 days it took them to find him. came out covered in scratches and mud and looked like he'd seen a ghost. must have been a seriously bad trip

Do the police also have the authority now to use Article 44 powers?  Am I missing something or is this a worrying escalation?  Surely normal laws, often practiced on these islands already, were sufficient.

This was run by the military.

The local police owns the drug trade.
