Perhaps he doesn't need the sort of friends he's found in Thailand. I for one have zero interest in sitting in a bar paying bar prices to drink and chatting about nothing much. I also have no interest in playing pool or darts, unless it's with a young cute Thai lady and anticipating things to come.

The things I did with my friends back home I can't do here.

I used to love drinking beer, gin & tonics and the odd glass of scotch on occasions, socially not an alcoholic,Β  but over the last 10 years I`ve been hit with an acid reflux problem, one glass of beer and after 5 minutes it feels like molten lava swirling about inside my stomach. I suppose health and age determines our lifestyles to a point.

Β

On reading some of the posts seems so many of you are anti socials, what we used to term as miserable old gits, old farts that have forgotten how to enjoy life and moan about everything. I am on good terms with all my Thai neighbours. Obviously language places barriers and can enjoy socilising more with English speaking expats for that reason. I know that many of you prefer to live in Farlang ghettos not more than 10 minutes from a Starbucks or coffee shops or prefer to isolate yourselves just with your Thai partners and stick your noses up at everybody else. These types are definitely cheap Charlies would begrudge even giving the time of day. Sorry, but don`t like you and eventually you`ll end up pushing everyone away, friendless and forgotten.

Your description and attitude/judgement of people has nothing to do with them being Cheap Charlie's.

I know plenty of nice people who love Starbuck's and enjoy the company of their Thai mate more then "friends".

Whats the problem with that? Maybe you haven't found someone who likes being with you?

You can have friends that don't drink much. Play golf or tennis or watch sports.

Hiked up to the Hmong Village this morning with a couple of pals, 15Km round trip, 3.5 hours.

Took some selfies with the Sakura, hadΒ grapow moo + a coke at 'Beautiful View coffee shop'.

Total cost 65bht, now that's value for money.

Chang Dow from our table in the Β coffee shop.

Watch sports, no thanks ..... too busy hiking, running, cycling.

SoΒ far this week, hiked 33Km, cycled 35Km, another 15Km hike booked for Friday.

LOL. Not everyone likes any of those, and I could have done those back home so don't count if you read my post "The things I did with my friends back home I can't do here".

Zero interest in golf or tennis, and would rather stick a red hot poker in my eye than watch sports.

However, if you know where I can go downhill skiing near C M I'll be a starter for that.

Thank MaeJo. Looks like a fantastic day out to me, I might get on the old motorbike and do that trip myself. Perfect weather at the moment, no rain, cool temperatures, have to get in before the hot and smoky season.

I've done thr trip many times...as you can see by the 2 maps(with scale) it is only about 5 km from middle of old town up to the base of suthep (at the CM zoo) Β then take the windy road up the hill.. prob another 7 to 10 kms. Dunno the way your map said it was 38 km bozo.....do you let GPS plot all your routes for you? They can be way off
