Six Illegal Bird Feed Vendors Arrested at Tha Pae Gate

CityNews – The city inspector has arrested six illegal bird feed vendors caught around Tha Pae Gate following complaints by locals that the number of pigeons has increased since their arrival.

Police conducted a crack down on illegal pigeon food vendors in July at Tha Pae Gate after locals complained about the growing number of birds in the area and reports that people were selling pigeon food despite a clear banning of such activities.

With hygiene as a main priority, the Chiang Mai municipality banned the sale or trade of bird feed in and around Tha Pae Gate to help reduce the number of disease carrying pigeons in the city. They have also conducted numerous pigeon catch and release projects that help further reduce the number.

Agree. What are they thinking? Pigeons are renowned for their homing instinct.

I like the man wearing a white shirt in the centre of the photo.

At that very place on the CM Tha Pae brick wall you will find a convenient hole, just below waist level.  Why is that hole there?

I don't know but you are welcome to try it and report back.

Pleased that they have gone .

The old guy with the bad legs was fine , he just used to sit there and wait for people to come to him, fair enough .

The new young bird seed sellers were into the hard sell game .

They used to come up to you , stand in your way and offer some bird seeds , this got quite annoying when it happened frequently , six different guys all offering bird seed .

They also handed the bird seed to little kids , expecting you to pay the 20 Baht .

If you didnt pay , they would take the bird seed away from the kid and this sometimes caused the kid to have a tantrum .

They gave a packet of birdseed to my kid , who began to feed the birds , he then came to me and was expecting 20 Baht .

I just told my kid to thank him for giving him the birdseed and walked off

Also happy to see these parasites gone, although I expect they will return just as the pigeons will following their "relocation".  I have also seen them target the kids by handing them the packets of seeds, all this whilst there are clear signs in multiple languages telling people not to feed the birds.

The pigeon catch and release programs may look like this (my photo taken in a Chiang Mai food market).

I bought these two badly wounded pigeons to release them, not to eat. Live and let live.

My garden is full of birds. They bring joy to my heart.
