DNP launches bee sting operation to prevent wild elephant intrusion

PRACHUAP KHIRI KHAN, 29th January 2018 (NNT) - A researcher at the Department of National Parks, Wildlife and Plant Conservation (DNP) said the pilot bee sting operation to prevent wild elephant from intruding into a farmland in Prachup Khiri Khan is successful.

The DNP's researcher, Rachaya Akachak, disclosed that she had visited Hat Kham sub-district in Kuiburi district of Prachaup Khirikhan province to follow up a project to use bee-raising boxes as a fence to prevent wild elephants from intruding into a pineapple farmland. She found out that the 40 beehive boxes, connected with a rope to create a fence worked well as expected.

Rachaya then advised pineapple farmers with suggestions on how to properly raise the bees. This is because the beehive fence's efficiency in preventing the wild elephant intrusion depends mainly on the quality bee raising system.

The bee sting operation, aiming to stop wild elephant intrusion and to prevent conflict between local people and wild animals in the pilot project area, is a success. In additional to this, the pineapple farmers will also be able to earn extra income from the selling of honey in the future.
