Renewing registration on a car that hasn't been registered for 3 years

Featured Replies

Dear forum members,

I have a car in Thailand that I can't sell because I am no longer living and working in Thailand.  However, I have been informed that even though I am not using the car (it is just sitting in a garage) I must still register it every year.

I was hoping that when/if I return to Thailand in a few years, I would be able to just register for that year, and not worry about the previous years where it wasn't being used.

Is it true that it must be registered every year?

Thanks.

Yes, upon registration you'll have to pay the outstanding years as well.

Or you could continue to leave it unregistered; but, after a certain amount of years go by (can't recall how many) the books no longer valid. You have to take the car in for inspections and applications for a new book.

No matter how long it is unregistered, you will be responsible for 3 years fees plus a small fine. In addition, you will pay for a new Blue book and plates.

What fees?

Why would it need new blue book and plates?

The unpaid tax and insurance fees as well as a small fine.

after a certain number of years (5 maybe) you need to re-register the vehicle and this will be with a new blue book and plates.

It’s a funny one, would it need taxed and insured if parked up in a garage, waste of money really?

Not sure about blue book, you could be right?

I've recently done this for a motorcycle that I bought cheap with no tax or insurance paid for the previous year and a half...

I had to pay the tax that was owing but not the insurance... so just 100bt for the previous year, plus 15bt fine for late payment.   Plus the tax for the current year, incl. the 6 months backdated.  The insurance was for the full year from the date it was paid, so it's no longer con-current with the tax.  I'm planning to pay it at the same time next time for simplicity.

I assume a car would be the same, but an unscrupulous agent may "try it on" and get you to pay more than required.

If you don't pay the Road Tax / Purchase Basic Gov. Insurance (Por Lor Bor) for Four Years, then the Registration book will be canceled.

Real hassle to get it replaced, and can take months.

If it is only 3 years now, better send someone to pay the Tax/Por Lor Bor now, before it's too late.

It is not very expensive, if the car is more than 7 years old, it will also need to be inspected. Can be done at DLT or one of those

privat places with the Yellow & Blue sign that looks like a Gear.

Not insured, but taxed. To avoid the annual tax you need to return the plates (you don't own them) then when you want to use it again, apply for plates again.

I've heard various length of times
that tax can go unpaid before the blue/green book is cancelled....then others say the books are never cancelled you just have to pay all the years of tax owed...would be good to get a definitive answer once and for all.

If here in BKK  I can do the registration for you and bring the car in for testing as well

Let me know and we can work out the details

I would like to reinforce what steve73 said.

We had a motorcycle hardly used that had expired by two and a half years.

We took it to the agent near the registration office.

They inspected it I paid all the outstanding years , bought the insurance for the current year and paid a small fine.

It was easy, but then we were in country at the time so no big deal.

I find it is easiest to pay the testing agents, which are nearby the registration office and sit in the shade whilst they sort it all out.

The fee is only about 200 baht extra and the fine was minor.

Seems it will be a lot more difficult if one is out of the country.

We've just bought a Mio motorbike that was a HP "snatch-back". It had been stuck in some warehouse for a few years and apparently the dealer bought a lot at auction. For us an older bike with low mileage and no apparent wear coming quite cheap and running like new - which it basically is.

When we went to register it at Mo Chit (NEVER go to the LTO on a Monday or a Friday it is far too busy) we paid 300 baht tax. The tax runs out in a month and we'll have to tax it again!  It was in store for nearly 4 years, and 3 we had to pay for. So it had tax already existing for the remainder of it's 1st year in store, but not the following almost 3 years until we bought it. But insurance - that was a new policy for one year taken out on the day we got the bike transferred to us.

This thread is pretty old now but I thought I would add a bit.

For most people not Thai the fees etc for Motor cycles are very cheap compared to the western world.

Sure no one wants to pay more than they have to but really the fees are not much at all even for a teacher on 30000 a month.

Regards.
