What are your favorite spots in lower Sukhumvit for

  • getting a fresh beer during the day,
  • getting lunch,
  • getting dinner (both non western food),
  • and hanging out at night (preferably with live music or smooth atmosphere)?

For getting lunch or dinner try the Lebanese food at the Beirut Restaurant, Sukhumvit Soi 2,  in the basement of the Ploenchit Center.

The Game adjacent to Nana BTS. For beer and people watching. Then get on the train and explore.

W district for dinner. Yes involves the train but lots of choices (non western)

yeah, this one is nice for middle eastern food...I also like the place across from Hanrahan's on soi nana for takeaway back to my hotel...good mezze plus indian curries, dahl, etc and garlic nan...eat half before bed and the rest next morning fer brekkie (and then the hotel cleaners come in and go : 'ICK!!! WHAT A MESS!!!')

but it's gotten a lot more expensive there in the last 18mos...

for a quiet beer I go to Bully's on sukhumvit near soi nana...they also got a good bar menu, useta have a nice caesar salad with an excellent light dressing...

STRONG RECOMMENDATION: Don't stay on Lower Sukhumvit. It's a complete hole and you'll be ripped off, assaulted by ladies and men of the night constantly and treated rudely. Foreign clueless tourist ghetto central. Avoid!!!

for the daytime, try the kiwi bar & restaurant on soi 8.  they've got a patio out front and you can do some people watching along the soi.  the crowd along that soi is somewhat normal, not quite the same as you find around soi 4.  if it is too hot, you can go inside and enjoy the A/C.  the food is good also.

the W district is in phra khanong.  sukhumvit soi 77.  it is only open at night so that won't help you with your daytime activities.  it is a good choice for evening time.  they have many different small shops serving different food from around the world.  use google to get the exact location.  you can enter off sukhumvit or soi 77.  i've been a few times, it is a mix of thais and farangs.  take the BTS to get there as traffic on sukhumvit is very heavy in the evening.  the BTS will also be packed but try to squeeze in.

edit:  if you want to see some classic bangkok, you could hit the beer garden on sukhumvit soi 7 for a daytime beer.  i believe that is still open.  it's best days are long gone.

I've always assumed the Lebanese place on the corner of Suk. and Soi-5 was a tourist trap and avoided it.  A few weeks ago I read a very positive review of it in another publication so a few nights ago, I gave it a try.

I had a "small" kebab platter that was not only very tasty and well prepared but enough food for 2 to share: B350

It contained 2 each; chicken, lamb and kefta kabobs. french fries, salad, toasted pita along with 2 full sized, warmed pitas, pickled veggies and toasted sticks of sesame bread with several dipping sauces.  Service was efficient and friendly.   Sorry, but I can not remember the restaurant's name.

That is by the Phra Khanong BTS stop.  It is marketed as a art area, but in there is also a big open air food court.  Lots of different stalls from a variety of western and non western foods.  You can also get beer, mix drinks, smoothies, etc.  A relaxing place to go for the evening.

It has been mentioned above the restaurant in the Ploen Chit center.  The food court on the sixth floor is pretty good during the lunch time.  Typical Thai food court, mainly for the office workers in Ploen Chit offer block.

Oh dear sounds like a jungle dweller has hit the Hong Tong a bit hard today and having a meltdown

Time for bed precious,  Bangkok quickly separates the men from the boys , the weaklings get spat out in short order

As you are now fully aware , you eat Bangkok or Bangkok eats you :coffee1:

sounds very nice...suhk soi 5...same soi as foodland? the place across from Hanrahans useta have schwarma but they were forced to withdraw during the 'sidewalk cleanup' a while back...they got kebabs and a special kebab chef with a bbq grill inside with the skewered meat on display in a cabinet, very popular with the other customers I've noticed...

if you carry on down soi nana there's an indian place on the RHS just past soi 6...respectable curries and comfortable dining...

Yes, on the corner of Sukhumvit.  Looks like a kebeb stand on the soi-5 side.  Used to be a Thai restaurant with the dining area below street level.

  • getting a fresh beer during the day - The place under Asok BTS, next to the steps, has the misted water spraying all day. OK crowd and good people watching.
  • getting lunch - Quite liking Bad Burger or various places in T21.
  • getting dinner (both non western food) - Favourite in that area is Gaucho but not too often $$$.
  • and hanging out at night (preferably with live music or smooth atmosphere) - Checkinn99, Soi33.

Watch out for the small print service charge, they are very sneaky.

That'll be Indulge.  The beer's fine and reasonably priced but the food is more than a little pretentious.  Strangely, is highly rated on TripAdvisor for the food but we found it lacking.  They seem a bit lost with the direction of the fusion nonsense.  It just didn't work for us.

Not my experience at all.  Great location for getting into central BKK and to Swampy via the tolls.  Plenty of entertainment and eateries on your doorstep.

My wife and I keep ourselves to ourselves, avoid normal taxis [we take limos with a company that we regularly patronise which isn't as expensive as it sounds] and don't go looking for trouble.

I suspect you are putting yourself in situations of your own making that are not conducive to your wellbeing, hence your negative experiences.

As indeed are those of its clients, of both sexes!

I find it so badly lit inside that it is near impossible to read the menu. I agree the balcony is fun for a beer and people watching - I particularly enjoy watching the casual indifference exuded by those buying the viagra and extraordinary collection of dildos sold by the enthusiastic gentleman who has the stall under the balcony.

It's a tacky tourist ghetto.

It is what it is, sadly it will never be what it used to be. Tourist ghetto? Not sure about that, plenty of them about certainly. Strangely tourists do not flock to Thonburi,  Nonthaburi or Pathum Thani to experience the "real" Thailand. "Foreigner Ghetto"? Yes pretty much, most major cities with anything to offer have them.

I much prefer going over the river. Food is better and half price.

Names? Places? How to get there? Is alcohol half the price too? Sukhumvit used to be popular with the regular visiting and long-stay foreigner because bars used to have a bit of atmosphere and craic.
