Prayut brushes aside activists’ call to step down

Prime Minister Gen Prayut Chan-o-cha brushed aside a call by the pro-election activists for his resignation if he chooses to enter politics.

He told those activists to look back to the past when politicians were in government and prepared for new election.

“Did any of them resign from their government positions to campaign for elections,” he said. He recalled that in the past, a party leader who was then prime minister declared to run in election and launch election campaign while still in the position of prime minister.

“Today, I haven’t done anything or hold any election campaign, but still is working hard to make changes to the country,”he said.

Might be worth just trying to call his bluff and say, "The NCPO can stay in power with no elections, but you and Prawit but promise to quit and never ever enter politics again. You can have no part in the future of the country".

Let's see if he's all about sacrificing for the current government being in power, or if he's all about his ego and wanting to remain the top dog with not a care in the world for anyone else but himself.

di "dinosaurs" ?

It starts with "di".

Charlie Chaplin satirised it - but no doubt that is banned...

But then you know that,.

I don't want to spoil your heartfelt list of yes and no's, but could you please supply a list like this for the last "democratic" government?

Or any before?

That would be getting off topic, AKA hijacking the topic. This thread is discussing the current group of bandidos.

Oh how convenient... He always took the distance from ex-politician, today he take them as an example...

The sooner the country gets rid of this character, the better for Thais.

If this is the best you can do, it is time for a change.  The Thai people deserve better.

I was referring to the person who made this statement and that was Prayut Chan-o-cha. Or hadn't you noticed?

The heading of my comment related to HIS comments and was thus:

".....but still is working hard to make changes to the country,” he said.

If you want to make up a yes/no list relating to previous governments feel free to do so.

What unmitigated nonsense. We hear plenty of talk and blather but don't see much work or changes.

Hard to see what he has done in the last 4 years. These are a just few of his successes and failures.

Increased corruption within government and civil service ranks - ALMOST CERTAINLY

Increased minimum wage by 22 baht - YES

Reduced twerking by Lamyai - YES

Cleaned up the pavements - NO

Fixed the beach chairs problem - NO

Fixed the lotteries - NO

Reformed the RTP - NO

Stopped people smuggling and slavery - NO

Reduced pollution from burning - NO

High speed trains construction start - NO

If he had to face voters in an election he would be given the boot and first out the door. Abject failure.

You views are so pedestrian. What did you expect one man to accomplish in of of the most corrupt civilizations calling themselves democracies.

Stabilizing the country from civil war itself is a huge accomplishment. Maintaining for 3 years without violence even moreso.

Keeping the international markets from fleeing and maintaining the second highest robust economy in se Asia is impressive.

How about recreating a constitution which tries to protect the country from the easily swayed peasants which vote for the greatest gifts starkly contrasting competent governing.

We've seen significant progress on corruption but only scratches the surface of a system corrupt system built over decades .

I think Prayut has done a fantastic job of holding the country together and keeping the political parties from the trough...imo

I don't. Corruption is as bad as ever as can be seen by the nepotism, watch scandal, Rajabhakti park, military procurements, etc. That civil war nonsense has also been long debunked. The country was nowhere near a civil war.

Outrageously funny defending the indefensible. Significant progress on corruption really knock me off my chair. :sleepy:

Pure misdirection.

Did he also recall that as per the 2007 Constitution and associated Organic Laws that:

  • Yingluck dissolved the House in order to hold new elections after opposition Democrat Party MPs resigned en masse when Yingluck refused their demand to resign contrary to constitutional procedures.
  • Yingluck thereafter assumed the position of caretaker PM along with her cabinet that substantially limited their administrative government powers
  • at all times as PM and caretaker PM Yingluck did not have absolute powers
  • as caretaker PM Yingluck was allowed to campaign for election
  • the Election Commission scrutinized very closely use of any government resources or personnel in Yingluck's campaigning for re-election

Did he further recall that his military coup to forcibly remove the Yingluck caretaker government

  • violated the Constitution, specifically Part 13, Right to Protect the Constitution under Section 68: "No person shall exercise the rights and liberties prescribed in the Constitution to  overthrow the democratic regime of government with the King as Head of State under this Constitution or to acquire the power to rule the country by any means which is not in accordance with the modes provided in this Constitution."
  • violated Penal Code by committing treason
  • abolished the Constitution

Finally, did he forget that as Chief of the NCPO junta he retains absolute power over all branches of government and Constitutional Organizations throughout the next election and post-election until a new government has been "installed," ie., after Prayut's concurrence and submission for royal endorsement?

It might have been more precise to call for Prayut to dissolve the NCPO and his position as Chief of the NCPO prior to elections and assume the role of a caretaker government with duties prescribed by the 2017 Constitution that appear to be no different than that in the 2007 Constitution. But then what would Prayut become - just another politician seeking office.
