A retired friend urgently requires a colonoscopy. Main international hospital in Pattaya has quoted him 35,000 baht for the colonoscopy excluding, hospital room, nursing costs, meds, any tests on any polps found etc. He's rightly concerned about managing the total cost. Could anyone recommend a hospital in bangkok and provide detail on their charges for a colonoscopy?

There should not be any room costs, it's a short procedure that involves an anaesthetic but it's all over and done with inside of two hours.

Total cost at a private hospital in the North is under 30k, under 25k if discounts apply (for long standing patients). I suspect Bangkok will be more expensive that Pattaya.

My apologies, I need to amend what I wrote earlier:

I quoted a price for a gastroscopy AND a colonoscopy, a round trip as they like to call it! The cost of a colonoscopy alone is as poster Airlee has said, about 15k baht in total.

If he urgently requires a colonoscoopy then he has some sort of disease process and his financial problems are not limited to the cost of the colonoscopy but also potentially the cost of treating what it may find, which could be much more.

I suggest he come to Bangkok and consult Prof. Chucheep Sahakitrungruang at Bangkok Christian Hospital. Dr. Chucheep is an excellent, US trained colorectal specialist. Consultation with him will cost around 1000 baht (will have to have consultation first - bring all medical records) and colonoscopy will cost around 17K (estimate). As he will have to see the doctor first before colonoscopy is scheduled should plan on spending a few days. Dr. Chucheep's consultations at BCH are on Mondays only https://www.bch.in.th/en/doctor-th-4/surgery/item/584-doc22.html

(he can do colonoscopy on other day)

There is a less expensive, but more  time-consuming, option for treatment by Dr, Chucheep and that is through the after hours clinic at Chulalonkorn Hospital where he is on faculty. register for a patient number on the first floor then go up to the 13th floor after 3 PM to get appointment. There may be a wait list. Colonoscopy at Chula will be under 10K, but as mentioned this route will involve a lot of waits.

He could also get the colonoscopy done at the government cancer hospital for under 10K, recommend having a Thai speaker come with him if he goes that route and as with all government hospitals expect long waits.   http://www.chulabhornhospital.com/Contact/90

The cost quoted in the OP seems excessively high............even in the expensive Bkk Phuket Hospital the cost, including polyp removal, is under 20k baht provided you don't tell them that it is being paid for by insurance!

Usually in and out in a couple of hours or so.

costs have gone up in the past few years everywhere. Are you sure Bkk Phuket hospital is still under 20K? As the other major "international" private hospitals have in the past few years raised to over 20K.

35K it does seem high, but others have reported similarly in the recent past.  BPH has 3 tier pricing: tourists, expat residents, and Thais. this is likely the "tourist" rather than resident expat cost.

Just had one done Sheryl (though combined with gastroscopy and anaesthetic) and asked the cost of just a colonoscopy for a friend..........was quoted 18k. Thinking about it polyp removal may have extra.

Had a colonoscopy at the Mayo hospital in Bangkok.

Stayed overnight because they wanted to do it at 7.00 am.

Total cost including a bevy of nurses was 20,150 baht. Even got a video of it if anyone wants to watch.

This was 5 years ago though so probably more now.

I have just learned that the Digestive Clinic that used to be at Eakami is now in the RSU tower on Sukhumvit at Soi 31. Prof. Varocha Mahachai comes  a few times a week and offers endoscopies at very competitive rate: Listed prices: colonoscopy 12,500 and gastroscopy 7,500. I am told this includes IV sedation. I did not think to ask re biopsies but since the number of specimens (if any)  can't be predicted in advance  I would assume additional.

There is some small increased risk in undergoing these outside of a hospital setting one should be aware of.  I had a colonoscopy in similar context with same doctor some years ago and was well impressed and reassurred by the precautions taken (considerably better than what I have experienced and observed in hospitals here, in fact) but still - in the rare event of something going seriously wrong  it will take longer to get to an ICU or OR than if the procedure were done in a hospital.

I had one at Bumrungrad last week, Dr Charkaphan Osangthanmont.  He was very good and I couldn't fault the support staff at Bumrungrad.  Total cost 29,000 (with no ployps to remove or analyze), so expensive.  But fortunately my insurance paid.

Last year, October 10, I had a colonoscopy in the RAM-Hospita of Chiang Mai by

MD Jaruwat Jossombat.

He did an excellent job (ambulant). The same in 2012.   No pain, not hurt.

Invoice

Total doctor fee                                                                              7.500 THB

Hospital Cost - including written report -        8.659 THB

./- discount (for regular customer)                 - 1.731 THB        6.928 THB

                    Total                                                                            14.428 THB

Even if you add the return-flight by a low-cost plane and taxi from the CM airport to RAM -and no discount in RAM - it would be ~20.000 THB.

I don't know if you would already get the discount by the 1st register and I don't know if the prices went up. Call 053 920300 ext. 4400 or e-mail: [email protected]. Normally you'll get an answer within the same day.
