Shopping at Kad Luang fabric store and asked for a receipt. Was handed a piece of paper with the price and meters of fabric. When I asked for a proper receipt I was told that l would have to pay vat in order to get a receipt. I asked how much extra? 7 baht! When I went into my pocket to give the extra baht I was told they would need my tax ID number. Which my organization has but I didn't have with me. I don't mind saying that I got hot about this. Bad idea, I know. But these were not Thais running the business and not very polite on their end. No sign in sight with any info about no receipts given.

I'm going back tomorrow with tax I'D.  I post about this incident because something seems not right here. I've been in this same store many times over the years and had no problem getting a receipt. Any idea what's going on?

This is over a 100 baht bill?  VAT is 7% (but thought it was going up).  It appears they believe you want a special tax recept which is not normally provided by small merchants?

My mistake. 294 baht was the purchase price.  When I returned with tax ID number the extra charge for vat was 24 baht. Got the receipt no conversation needed.

My bet is that they have owned that shop for generations and are 100% Thai... :coffee1:

Close guess. They own 4 shops. One almost directly across the street and two others within 5 minutes walking distance from each other. People who have lived here a long time will know exactly which shops I'm talking about.

I went to one of the other stores today and found out they are all related. However, I asked for a receipt and was not asked for a tax ID number.

Perhaps they are not reporting (or under-reporting) their cash sales on their Thai income tax reports.  Once you ask for an "official" receipt, that raised alarm bells that perhaps you were claiming purchases from their business as a raw material as a product you are making for resale on your own Thai tax reports.
