I got a True Move SIM for calls, how did I get internet?

Hi,

I just got to Thailand and went to the True store and bought a SIM for 49 THB, then paid another 100 THB for voice. I was under the impression I will get no data service.

To my surprise, I see 3G on my iPhone 5 and starting getting messages on WhatsApp. Then I found that I could serve the web at a decent speed.

I did all that without activating anything except accidentally signing in to True Wifi at the mall (it says 1 THB/min) and I had quickly disconnected.

Anyone knows what plan is that? Doesn't seem to affect the balance much.

I look at the various True 4G plans, asked at the main store, a store outside Big C, and then at 7-eleven. All gave me slightly different prices, configurations, etc. Most masked the speeds. I'm very confused.

thanks

I think you will find that unless you activate a specific internet package, its a default X amount of baht a day for basic internet, taken from your call credit.

Normally you will pay 1.07 baht/min as the default rate for mobile data, which will come off your 100 baht balance.

It is advisable to add value and then subscribe to a mobile data plan which meets your needs (duration, volume, speed). Otherwise, disable cellular data in settings.

You can get daily, weekly, monthly plans in single-use or recurring format, with unlimited speeds/capped volume, limited speeds/unlimited volumes.

All depends on what you need/want. Or let us know what you think you use/need and we'll recommend a plan or two.

March, 2018 TrueMove H plans, use Google Translate, subscribe to the plan via USSD code.

I checked my balance later in the morning and about 50 THB was deducted. I am guessing it got deducted once after I past a MB limit.

I went to True today and bought the 6 Mbps pre-paid plan for 1 month. Now I learn that my iPhone 5 from AT&T is only capable of 3G, so on to the next adventure to find a 4G phone.

The Unlimited Packeges are great

I need to do a webex with the US, not sure how well it will do especially with the iPhone 5. I think it wouldn't do very well.

Didn't see any fine print about speed get throttled after a certain data, so hoping there's none.

I use this package for a month with its "always on" connection at 211 baht including vat

1gb data at 3g/4g speed and when that limit is reached it throttles the speed for rest of the month but for whatever reason still quick enough to run Youtube without buffering

*900*1801# and then "call"

activates within seconds although you may need to reboot the phone

Sounds like you have the A1428 variant?

Still, you should be able to max. out a 3G (850/2100) connection with that 6 Mbps plan? Not sure 4G will give you anything more/better/faster, unless you opt for an unlimited speed plan, which can go as high as 150 Mbps (3CA/20 MHz).

Maybe read the T's & C's re: continuous usage/webex as there may be some limits on the unlimited volume 6 Mbps package? Obviously, a fixed broadband connection would be better but understand that may not be an option.

Yes I do have the A1428 variant.

I did a speedtest yesterday and already hit 6 Mbps, so I think the iPhone 5 is sufficient for now. Nevertheless a cheap modern phone to bring back is something I like to do.

I am only here for a couple of months, so a fixed broadband line is not the best option.

Thanks

But a cheap, modern phone purchased in Thailand may not work in the U.S.

I was under the impression that these days phones support all the GSM standards, so they should be good anywhere.

Sprint and Version could still be problematic.

At the low end your impressions might be misguided.

But just do the research first.

You have to go into your phone menu and turn off "Mobile Data"  otherwise you are going to soon run out of data, which in 4 G speak is also voice

You can set if you want to turn 4G "Off", if it should be used only for "Data" or "Data and Voice", Sometimes when I find Internet connection over 4G stall or be very slow I turn it off, and uses 3G instead.  It does not work all the times, but many times in crowded areas I have found it work well.

There are so many different bands now (USA just got Band71) any phone is bound to work to some extent everywhere

I looked at the LTE networks for the US and compared that to the specs of the phones sold here. Seems like not many of the phones will be compatible with the 4G over there. No wonder phones like the iPhone X charges the premium.
