The 82-year-old scanvenger kicked unconscious by a 21-year-old man two weeks ago in Bangkok’s Huai Khwang district had succumbed to death last night (March 29) at Rajavithi hospital.

The death of the old man, Charoon Meephan, prompted Huai Khwang police to summon the suspect, Mr Narathorn Sodtiyang, who was earlier charged with assault causing injuries, to acknowledge a new charge of assault causing death.

The incident occurred on March 13. Mr Narathorn was caught by CCTV cameras using a mobile phone while riding his motorcycle which later crashed with Charoon’s three-wheel bicycle. Mr Narathorn then walked toward the old man and assaulted him.

The burden of proof is on the  prosecutor. It must be shown that the . injuries hastened the man's death. If there were underlying medical conditions, it won't be an easy case to prosecute. The  estate can probably squeeze some money and a few wais from the bully though.

Juroon Meepan’s family hold up a portrait of him Friday at Ramathibodi Hospital.

BANGKOK — An elderly scavenger kicked unconscious earlier this month died Thursday night, leading police to upgrade charges against the man who assaulted him.

Juroon Meepan, 82, was rushed to the hospital with a fever and bedsores and died at at 10:50pm at Rajavithi Hospital.

Attempts to resuscitate him failed after 30 minutes. Two weeks ago he was kicked off his bicycle cart by Narathorn “George” Soattiyung, 21, whose motorcycle clipped his cart, called a saleng, in a Bangkok alley.

82-year-old assault victim dies, assailant faces new charges of causing unintentional death

A 21-year-old motorcyclist, alleged to have assaulted an 82-year-old tricycle-riding scavenger over a minor collision in Bangkok’s Huai Kwang district on March 13, has been hit with an additional charge of causing death to another person by inflicting injury without intent to cause death.

The new charge was filed against Narathorn Sodetiyung, son of a Pratunam-based clothing retailer, at 1.30am on Friday morning after victim Jaroon Maneephan died at 10.40pm on Thursday, said Huai Kwang superintendent Pol Colonel Kampol Rattanapratheep. The charge carries a sentence of imprisonment for 3-15 years.

Narathorn - who denied the new charge as police are still waiting for a medical report to confirm the death’s link to the assault – was brought to court on Friday for a court order for the first 12-day detention period.

The suspect’s girlfriend, identified only as May, said she would apply for a bail release for Narathorn so that they could attend Jaroon’s funeral in Ayutthaya's Bang Sai district. Police objected to Narathorn getting bail as the offence carries a heavy punishment.

Jaroon, who was said to be healthy from riding a tricycle while scavenging, became bed-ridden at home for 14 days following his hospital treatment for the serious injuries sustained from the assault. Narathorn reportedly negotiated to pay the family compensation by monthly installments of Bt3,000.

Jaroon, who suffered from bedsores, was rushed to Rajavithi Hospital with a high fever on Thursday afternoon. His condition worsened and he stopped breathing. Medical staff worked unsuccessfully for 30 minutes to resuscitate him before pronouncing him dead at 10.40pm.

Jaroon's younger sister Boonreun Thepphuthorn, 65, said she wanted police to proceed with legal actions against Narathorn over the death of her eldest brother. Jaroon had eight siblings.

How in the world can you, him, deny this charge !!

Furthering his idiocy...

Confess and halve the sentence;

Good, at least he will be off the streets and not bother the rest of us

Twenty year old kicking an octogenarian in the head.
The very poster boy for why so many disparage Thai men.
I hope karma is not delayed.

Best possible punishment for creatures like him: hand him over to his family and friends.

Underlying medical conditions?  you mean like being an 82 year old man who obviously lived a hard life and probably wasn't in great health.

The attack on him was uncalled for but to blame the young guy for his death is ludicrous.

I hope this 21 year old piece of filth is not from a HiSo family who can and will buy his

way out of prison. This is a case where the General PM could use his power and give this

jerk a very long jail sentence.

Geezer
