Orangutans are being made to fight each other in boxing bouts for the entertainment of tourists in Thailand, shocking photos reveal.

 

Horrifying images document how bikini-clad apes are dressed up as ‘ring girls’ and elephants forced to perform tricks on a stone stage in front of audiences.

 

Environmental photojournalist Aaron Gekoski, 37, witnessed how animals are being exploited in cruel shows for holidaymakers on a tour of the country’s zoos.

 

‘The orangutans are forced into hideous pantomime routines,’ he said.

Yep...as usual, put the blame on non- Thais!

As much as it is true, that the demand dictates (sort of) the market- how about NOT OFFERING that $4yt3 in the first place?

How about ENFORCING your own laws on animal cruelty...if there are any!?

 

Just take a stroll around the "pet"- section at Chatuchak!

It is not, that these crimes against animal- welfare are well hidden!

Any policeman could go there (or just walk up and down Beach Road in Pattaya or Patong) and see it!

But since TIT, nothing will be done and we put the blame on tourists!

It's just sick and annoying!

 

Maybe animals would be treated better, if they would wear period- costumes...?!

Any 'entertainment' venue that profits from the captivity of wild animals should be closed down and the entire practice made illegal.

 

The only reason a wild animal should be kept in captivity is for conservation reasons.

Some people say I'm extreme because I include dogs as well.

If I'm asked can your dog do any tricks I usually answer yes, she sits when told, lies down when told stays and comes to me when told and bites people in the ass when they ask if she does tricks.

Although I agree 100% that these animal shows are cruel and disgusting, in all fairness the headline blaming the tourists is from the original article (U.K. not Thai). The purpose of repeating it as the heading for this post is questionable.

1. Blame those people who actual stoop so low to offer such entertainment.

2. Blame the officialdom that turns a blind for a greased palm.

 

I had friends come to Thailand and they wanted to see a tiger at a temple or whatever.  Just told them I did not believe in wild animal petting zoos.  They should be left alone or preferably in their native habitat.   The only reason I have a dog is that he needed medical attention and a home.  And that was 20 years ago.  He is still around and healthy.  Touch wood.

He added: ‘What I witnessed was shocking and incredibly distressing'.

 

 

A 15 minute documentary showing the chimp trainers and production of the launch ad for the new pyramid PG Tips tea bag in 1996. The U.K company used dressed up chimpanzees in its tea adverts for 30 years until 2003.

 

Isn't 2003 the 21st century Bertie? Never seen anything like this? You obviously don't watch much Television.

The problem exists for the animals. They have more right to be on this planet than we have. I hate to see wild animals caged and in shows, it only goes to show we are lower on the evolution scale than they are.

Natural selective breeding has produced many beautiful and useful animals, some not so beautiful but still have a purpose. Non-selective breeding has produced todays human race that does nothing but destroy the planet and the destruction rate increases as our numbers increase.

I read something years ago that stuck in my head, 'as soon as you stop thinking you are important to this planet and realise you are just one small part of the worst infection ever that is poisoning this once pristine place things may improve.

I recognise the orang-utans in the pictures, but those other creatures are not human.

Of course its sponsored by tourists, as I pack my bags and prepare to travel each time I can hardly contain my excitement at the possibility of being able to view wonderful acts of animal cruelty, specially arranged by animal loving locals whom if it wasn't for my impending visit would be out saving whales and carrying out other selfless acts of animal humanity. But of course they have to set aside their love and adoration of animals and sacrifice their personal beliefs to entertain me and other tourists, as is their duty. Oh, hang on a mo, for a moment there I forgot I am not Chinese, I am an educated tourist so I actually don't enjoy these sort of things.. oh deary me, I have just detracted the Thai tourist industry, I will burn in hell for that sin, I know I will arrange a monkey burning as an act of atonement on my next visit.....

It would not be like the Thais to " glorify " their control and ownership over animals.

 

After all, you just need to see the pet dogs they possess, being dressed in all kinds of pantomime costumes on sweltering hot days, and then performing tricks for any audience that will look, and then laugh or comment how clever the animal is

Of course I agree with your general message and those of almost all posters on this thread but I rather think that your suggestion that selective breeding of the human race might bring an improvement is quite "brave" of you.

It is dumb ignorant tourists that are fueling the trades in animal cruelty for entertainment purposes.

 

Many of these animals perform out of fear, they are hit, beaten and even drugged into submission. I never visit those places and never will. Very easy, no tourists, no money and then these places go out of business. What`s so difficult to understand about that?

Slight twist on what I meant but I understand your post. If I said nature doesn't get a chance to let only the best suited for survival survive whereas in the animal kingdom it does. I'm not suggesting a temporary or 'final' solution. Just saying that's the way it is.

At sometime nature will have it's way and all our medical and technical advances won't help.
