I was born in Australia, my father is Australian and my mother is Thai, I also have a sister who is 2 years older than me. I was studying in Australia until Year 1, then we moved to Thailand, now I'm studying in Year 10. My question is, my father is thinking of moving back to Australia after my sister finishes Year 12, so if I move back to Australia, do I still have to join the military, because I don't to stay in Thailand so I don't think I'll ever come back?

Partly depends on your nationality I would think, are you Thai or Australian?  If you're not Thai you obviously can't be conscripted into the Thai army, if you are Thai and you're going back with your father and not returning what does it matter?

There was an earlier post a week or so ago concerning this type of situation answered by UboneJoe who knows pretty well what the situation is, but as far as I'm aware, if you have been living here as a Thai,  , and if you have been registered on someones blue housebook, then you'll be in the system. If you leave Thailand, then you need to make sure that your parents register with a government agency (can't recall which, but UbonJoe would know) that you are living somewhere outside Thailand, and therefore are exempt from being drafted. I may not be 100% correct on this, but that's for others to chime in, but you MUST register this info prior to being called for drafting.

Earlier quote from UbonJoe, do this and you'll be fine

Is this a hard fact if someone has avoided the draft by being abroad?

Is there still not a chance of being imprisoned?

If living abroad they should register for an exemption at the Thai embassy for an exemption before they turn 21 which is the first year they would be called for draft.

interesting. i have a half thai son. so as long as he uses his nz passport to visit thailand until he is 30 he wont have to go into the ballot for military service?

The maximum age for being drafted is 30. That is the law.

My son has dual nationality and got drafted for Militairy Service.

After talking at school with the other Thai boys who were eligible for the draft did he tell us he would take his changes in the draft lottery to get hit over with, like all his friends did.

Also he would volunteer for the Navy as they did not got send to South Thailand.

OK, went to the lottery but they told him they only needed Army so he said "not interested" and got a number for the lottery, nr 136 from 138 boys.

At 1700 hrs it was his turn and there were only 3 numbers left in the sack.

Stuck his hand in and extracted a ball and Hurrah it was BLACK!!

Got right away a document signed and stamped "exempted for Militairy Service" :clap2::intheclub::burp:

PS I hope that I did not hijack the thread, if so my apologizes.
