Ray Donovan MINI_SPOILER below. Stop here if you don't want to know. You have been warned....

Season 2, Ep 2: Ray is sitting at the bar at Hollywood park Casino with Wendell Pierce ("Ronald Keith"), who he's setting up to be Mickey's new hard core parole officer. He's already handed Keith a big wad of cash to pay off a gambling disaster. Ray thinks it's all settled, but then Keith takes a look at Ray's flashy all gold wristwatch. "Saayyyy, that's nice, that a Seamaster, Oyster, what?" Ray looks at him with a slightly pained look, gives a sigh, and handing it to him, says, "It's a Daytona."

Well, as the proud owner of a $100 Casio Edificecasio_edifice_EF527D-1AV.JPG (Don't mean to flaunt my vast wealth, sorry.)

I had to see what a "Daytona" was. Ray's only apparent vanity, besides his quietly elegant Mercedes touring sedan, is his watch collection. Are you ready for this? Dig it: Retails for about $28,000, but you might get a discount if they know you're a friend of Ray's. Needless to say, Keith's face really lit up when he slid that baby onto his own wrist. Surprised he didn't ask Ray for the original box and certificate of authenticity. Great scene.

Perfect bling to wear while walking down Pattaya's Beach Rd. at 3 AM. wink.png

Ray's collection is a wonder to behold when he pulls out the drawer and selects a watch. Probably should have chosen a Seamaster that day.

The situation in Israel with Gaza has resulted in 3 series filming to be moved permanently out of Israel. Tyrant has moved to Turkey, Homeland moved its scenes to Morocco, and DIG is doing the same.

http://www.deadline.com/2014/07/tyrant-to-stay-in-turkey-for-remainder-of-season-1-filming-fx/

Sorry to quote my own post, but this article, just out, says that because the head of Fox Broadcast TV is so tickled with the results of the 24 return, that another season is coming up. Interesting read about how the heating up of events in the Middle East has heightened interest in Jack Bauer. (Israel/Gaza plus new cold war with Russia)

Just watched the latest "Suits" episode. The betrayals are getting so numerous, one needs a scorecard to keep track.

The edition of Eric Roberts adds a touch of sleaze to the proceedings. There's something deeply twisted about that guy, that goes all the way back to when he murdered his girlfriend (Mariel Hemingway) in "Star 80".

Maybe it's the slight lisp, or the jaded "knowing" smile, like "I've got your number. You're as messed up as me, deep down."

Sorry Claudius, but I don't consider that last post a spoiler. I revealed nothing of the current plot, just a general impression of the drift of the show this season. Betrayals have been happening all throughout this set of episodes, and really throughout the whole history of the program.

Eric Roberts came onto the show several episodes back. He exploded onto the scene in 1983, in the film "Star 80". Maybe a lot of folks didn't see that one. From Wikipedia:

Star 80 is a 1983 American film about the true story of Playboy Playmate of the Year Dorothy Stratten, who was murdered by her estranged husband Paul Snider in 1980. The film was directed by Bob Fosse, and starred Mariel Hemingway and Eric Roberts.

Roger Ebert's 1983 review of the film is well worth reading. Even better, have a look at it. SPOILER: It's VERY disturbing. I can't ever watch Eric Roberts in any role without thinking of that movie. Somewhat like the late, great Dennis Hopper, he seems to specialize in "weirdo" roles. I'd really like to see him do a film with his sister Julia.

To be fair, that's hardly a spoiler. There's been a bucket load of back'n'forth in this series and Frank doesn't let slip where it's all coming from.

The addition of the actor's name and not the character doesn't give away too much either.

Unless of course you're referring to "Star 80" in which case, yeah that's a spoiler. :P

Have recently (sadly) watched the last episodes of Californication and Rake.

With the final series of Sons of Anarchy and Justified this year, was

thinking about my favourite newish series.

I haven't seen any of Ray Donovan series 2 as yet (saving them up),

but I think it is my new favourite.

Justified is still my number 1 but will be finishing at the end of the next series.

I also like POI a fair bit as well.

Also, just saw that The Expendables 3 is out before the actual release datew00t.gif

So gangsters, what are your new faves?

SoA will - hopefully - be a cracker!

Ray Donovan's been a must watch for me since it started as is Suits.

My new favorite release for 2014 is The Night Shift, closely followed by Black Box

Gang Related, Power, Tyrant and Chicago P.D have made impressive debuts

Welcome To Sweden is pretty damn funny well, it should be in a longer format though, the 30mins (including ads) format is a waste. Undateable was also a pisser as well, what was good about the format was that it was always a double (2 x 30 min) episode.

Satisfaction and Rush have kicked off well and if they maintain that type of pace they'll be excellent.

There's a decent watchable copy of The Expendables 3 on PB (DiNGO), if you consider this movie watchable. It's the usual Sylvester Stallone stuff with an over the hill, aged, decrepid, what the hell are we watching them for, aging all star OLD action hero cast. It's a good movie to watch if you have a lot of other stuff to do at the same time or you are severely bored or mentally challenged.

All I can say is...actually I am at a loss for words. I think I need to go take another look in the mirror and try to come to terms with the ravages of age. facepalm.gif Wesley Snipes looks good though he's a lot younger than the other geriatrics like Arnold, Harrison Ford, Stallone, in the film.

Not to beat a dead horse, but, in the case of Star 80, if that is the "spoiler" we are talking about, the story was true, and well known, and had even been done before in a made for TV mess called "Death of a Centerfold". The audience knew beforehand that Snider had murdered the lovely, naive Dorothy Stratten. The film attempted, successfully, to show what kind of polluted thinking ends up in an act of narcissistic homicidal rage.

Well, tastes are so subjective. Only series on at the moment I find of interest are Ray Donovan, Suits, Halt And Catch Fire, and Extant. 1st episode of Married didn't do much for me but Satisfaction may have potential.

Who says Nic Cage can't act? I just watched a great little indie film called "Joe", adapted from a dark Southern story by Larry Brown. Has the same sort of menace and sadness that permeates "Winter's Bone." Tye Sheridan, the same kid that was so good in "Mud", is even better, and a little older in this one.

Highly recommended. Five Stars.

Satisfaction may have potential.

That is how felt. It did not do much for me, but it might get better.

The Strain is the new show that interests me most at the moment, but there are a lot of contenders.

If I mention anything further about Suits, I promise to say SPOILER COMING!

I was reading about the show, and they showed the ratings for the years it has been shown. The audience has steadily declined every season, to the point where they either have to think about ending it, or going to a more widely seen network than "USA." The show has had great critical success, and a devoted core following. We all love to catch glimpses of the 1%, or at least their lawyers, at work, don't we. I know I do. Guilty pleasure.

Agreed.

A lot of the tension in Suits has been removed now that Ross left the firm. Similarly w/ his relationship w/ Rachel after it solidified--which I guess the writer/producers realized, hence the effort to complicate it and increase tension there. Should have sexed the series up more (taking a cue from Game Of Thrones).

As TV series go, Suits is too brainy and business-oriented for your average member of the great unwashed. For us, of course, that's one of the things we really like about it. Being so, it lacks action & adventure, vampires, zombies, murders, serial killers, and the usual overtly stereotypical topics, though inevitably there has been some pandering to the social hot buttons.

I hope it continues.

What sort of a man is Donald Rumsfeld? I watched Errol Morris' documentary, The Unknown Knowns, because, aside from seeing nightly news snippets of his press conferences, the only impression I had was...extreme arrogance, zero humility. In the five years he served as Secretary of Defense in the GW Bush administration, he fired off over 10,000 memos, a fact which is made much of in the film.

Annoyingly, the film returns several times to the famous memo that has become almost a mantra, of which Rumsfeld is most proud:

There are known knowns. These are things we know that we know. There are known unknowns. That is to say, there are things that we know we don't know. But there are also unknown unknowns. There are things we don't know we don't know.
Blah blah blah...
Is this brilliance, or mere sophistry? Is he a genius, or just a career hustler? I still don't know. He seems to have no regrets whatever over the invasion of Iraq. As for the aftermath, he shrugs that off as somebody else's problem. It's a good film, well worth watching, but I was glad when it was over. Ninety minutes of Big Ego.

Suits. I love almost every character on the show, but Louis probably is the best. That makes a big difference

I like Louis. I would have liked to have seen him kept as more of an A*#ehole in the first couple of seasons. Too much touchy feely stuff for my liking.

Suits, again...

Would you rather:

  • Go to the ballet with Louis.
  • Go to a Knicks game with Jeff Malone.
  • Go to a Concours d'Elegance car show with Harvey.
  • Have a hot dog lunch on the street with Donna.
  • Watch a classic film with Jessica.
  • Go to a Daft Punk concert with Rachel and Mike.
  • Have a drink with Mike's secretary at Sidwell.
