Policeman injured by drunk-driving Air Force officer

By The Nation

A policeman was hit and injured by a drunk-driving Air Force officer at a road checkpoint in Bangkok's Lak Si district early on Monday.

Pilot Officer Thanapol Thongkham, 32, an officer of the Royal Thai Air Force's Directorate of Communications and Electronics, was arrested following the 3am accident in front of Soi Chaeng Wattana 6.

Pol Senior Sgt-Maj Sakda Chapu, 45, an officer with Thung Song Hong police, was hit by Thanapol’s car, causing him to fall unconscious.

Thanapol said he had not spotted the policeman. He admitted seeing the flashing lights at the checkpoint but had not slowed down.

He said he had been drinking with a friend at a restaurant in Lak Si to celebrate achieving his master’s degree and was driving home when the friend phoned him and asked him to go back and fetch him. He said the accident occurred while he was on his way back to the restaurant.

Pol Capt Thammapakorn Thamrongpatthama, deputy inspector of Thung Song Hong police, said Thanapol’s blood-alcohol level was found to be 256 per cent higher than the legal limit for driving.

Thammapakorn said the injured policeman was now in stable and safe condition at the Police Hospital but doctors would need to continue monitoring his head injuries for several days.

Recently a good freind of both me and my Wife lost her mother, when a car, overtook a truck, cut in too fast on a wet road, lost control and smashed into the lady, who was riding her bike on the shoulder,he smashed her through a fence and into a ditch, the car landing on top of her and splitting her head like a ripe melon[i saw the photo's], guess what the driver was very drunk, but also a Policeman, who is now refusing to pay any compensation. He has been charged but no doubt it will be a small fine and a transfer to an inactive post.

A drunk pilot what else could possibly go wrong a clear case of policeman should have got out of the way 256% his fault carry on flying.

Not all members of the air force are pilots. The ranks of flying officer and pilot officer don't necessarily mean the holder goes anywhere near a plane let alone the controls. Same with flight sergeants - they don't all fly!

Zero's and percentages are still too complicated for the Nation.

Well it says his alcohol level was 2.56 times (256 per cent) higher than the legal limit. So if the legal limit is 0.05% then this guy had 0.128%
