There were more than one Asus model affected...cut and paste from above post...all older models.

Pib, note that my ONE affected ASUS router comment above was specifically in regards to their AC class routers (RT-AC...), not the list of N class routers you added (RT-N...).

It's good to see that only ONE ASUS router model from the newer AC class is included in the latest warning list.

  • Some more info...includes a list of routers/NAS known to be susceptible....not to imply other routers/NAS are not.  https://www.symantec.com/blogs/threat-intelligence/vpnfilter-iot-malware

  • Didn't see the post with the list first, but I got interested the other night when you posted this, and cabled my computer to the 3bb router to login for a looksee.    My password didn't wor

  • I confirmed with 3bb that they do not provide firmware updates. I also place my 3bb router in Bridge Mode and advocate all users do the same.  3bb made a change last year.  A phone call to 1530 is now

yes you did....I stand corrected.

I guess so few people use DD-WRT  that  they don't even  use the  term  "stock ROM" firmware  ....... just model numbers, which presumably no one ever re-flashes to up to date firmware even of the Brand of the hardware

Asus is very good in keeping its routers firmware up to date to fix bugs, add new features/capabilities, close the door on new internet threats which are formally known as  Common Vulnerabilities and Exposures (CVE).

Asus is probably not the worst in terms of security , but you should definitely listen to this podcast episode as they really really come from far on that area : https://darknetdiaries.com/episode/5

Thanks for reporting the issue - will work on adjusting my home setup now that you got me scared
The threat of someone snooping on my traffic to change my https requests into http is .... scary !

there is definitely something strange going on, in the past 18 months or so I have owned 3 Asus routers, different models such as RT-N66U, AC-58U, AC-68U.

All three ended up bricked at some point during normal operation, all lights on, but no ping, no wifi, no lan, no internet. Reboot, power cycle didn't help, and 30 second factory reset didn't help either.

I was however able to recover all three routers by flashing their ROM with new firmware.
