Country shocked as rejected men resort to murder

It's a complex, multi-facated problem that needs to be assessed on a case-by-case basis.

Having said this, as a global society we do seem to disregard or place little importance on morals and values that build the cultural cornerstones. It starts with the erosion of the nuclear family, which in turn leads to sharp drops in "community" spirit (ala connection to neighbors and attending outlets to focus on religious/ spiritual well-being). These foundations have been replaced by seclusion/ isolation, instant gratification and celebrity/ media/  sensationalism that warps peoples sense of worth and situational realities.

This is more evident in developed western societies which is further compounded by a feminist movement that demonizes the male "patriarchy".

Fragile ego's, small penis syndrome, stupid soaps glorifying guns and women beating, immaturity, loss of face and downright stupidity...all major contributing factors!!!

While one should avoid overly simplistic answers to a serious problem, I can't help but say that Thai men often are reared with an attitude that they can do no wrong and that 'Face' matters more than anything else. Further, Thai society doesn't seem to place a great deal of emphasis on 'rights and wrongs'; can anyone outline the Thai equivalent of a personal moral code or the Thai equivalent of personal responsibility? When young Thai men seek a role model, perhaps they see Prayut (and other leaders) who simply took/did what they wanted by bypassing all norms and proper behaviour? And, perhaps more importantly, get away with it?

How does Thai society treat women? Are they valued as equals with all the same rights and privileges? Or, are they seen as a prize and something to own?

In light of the above, are we surprised that there are incidents like this?

You can't draw firm conclusions from one or two incidents, but I suspect that we will see even more of this kind of behaviour in the future.

It is terribly sad to see young lives snuffed out before seeing them reach their potential.

RIP

I think young Thai women have the same problem about saving face and often downright arrogance and nastiness if they happen to be beautiful. The more followers some of them have on Facebook the more arrogant and rude they are.

Ever watch Japanese porn (Who, me?? I was only told about it!). Japanese men have that rep, but not Indians.

Although these stories are shocking, what I feel is more worrying is the WHY ? Why should young onviously fit healthy boys/men, shoot their girlfirend and then themselvces. Is it loss of face, is loss of street cred, is it the fact that so many times over the years I have been toild stories of just how girls are treated by thier Thai boyfriends, that now the females are pushing back and no longer being the compliant females the boys want.
Whichever way you look at it , it is a sad affair.

Wonderful post, Samui Bodoh. Could not agree with you more. And yes: what a grand example (not!) Prayut sets to the entirety of Thailand's youth. Following that role model, it is perfectly fine to commit the ultimate treason against one's own people - and then go on to rule the roost with impunity. What a sterling moral exemplar!

And you will of course recall the highly intelligent comment from a certain PM following the double murder on Kho Tao, "no Thai would do this"

So don't expect any great changes soon.

Having read all of the posts so far it would appear that all of us know what the problems/issues are but the Thais, it seems, have no clue, and will just continue to do as they have been doing. The events will only get more frequent.

It is often said that by Westerners who have lived here for years that Thais never learn from experience.

Just looking at the Thais' behaviour on the roads - and the fact they now hold the world record for road fatalities - confirms that.

One big issue with the guys who have lived here long enough is that they have rosy memories of what it's like back home, and no clue how that's been changing in the past (however long they've been here) years.

You also have to look at the soaps and music videos. Rejection is almost exclusively met with a desire or acting out of violent vengeance.

Thai lads in my experience are either incredibly decent or complete nuggets. Very few tread the grey between sadly

Agree, IMO those Thai soaps have a lot to answer for. All over the nation young impressionable Thais watch those shows nightly, and every night it's the same...your BF or GF has another lover so you get a gun or a knife and kill her/him or try kill yourself.

It is a complicated cluster of causes that require a lot of re-examination of family values.  Smaller modern families probably encourage dysfunctional parenting and more spoiling of children.  Even one generation ago effective contraception was not widely employed in LOS and larger families forced sharing of attention between siblings.  People were poorer and this reduced resources available and made kids share.  Now, it is common for families with one or two children only, and two working doting parents spoil them.  The change from rural to urban living and both parents working means less quality time with parents and TV becomes the babysitter.  Also the Asian preoccupation with boy children gives rise to the "little Emperor" a.k.a. the selfish spoiled brat son who can do no wrong.  You see it in male Thai driving every day.  And the Asian "face" thing.  Selfish spoiled and self-important.  Ask any school teacher.

Dr Apichat Jariyavilasa, a psychiatrist and spokesman for the Department of Mental Health, said such cases of assault and killing of former partners could stem from various factors, including a person’s immature character or violence-prone upbringing, a heat-of-the-moment reaction when hurtful words are exchanged or narcotic/alcohol abuse.

He urged people suffering heartbreak or severe disappointment to the point of it affecting their health, causing insomnia or suicidal thoughts, to seek a psychiatrist’s help or call the department’s hotline 1323.

The Psychologists who treats those sick bastards are gonna need a Psychologists themselves later :cheesy::cheesy:

I think you will find that even in Theravada Buddhism woman are second class. Men can reach Nirvana but women cannot. Do you see any women Monks in Thailand? Until that root core value changes Thai men will see themselves as 'superior' to a Thai woman.

Not sure that is a valid argument. If you are or consider yourself to be Buddhist, then there is sufficient teaching for this feeling of "superior" to be negated and not of importance.

Saying that it's due to Buddhism is like claiming it was alchocol /drugs etc. for your actions.
