How to Report Location to Insurance When You Have an Accident?

Recommended Posts

Posted

Suppose you have an accident on a trip or in a location you're not very familiar with. It seems like there should be an easy way to give your location so the insurance agent can get to you quickly, like sending your google location or something like that. Does anyone have any experience with this?

I'm currently insured by AXA.

Best idea will be to get a Thai bystander near you to explain the location to the insurance guy unless of course you're fluent in Thai and know how to explain where you are at...

Good plan would be better if we could send locations by line or something like tha.

Strange that the OP like your advice that is base on mine but for that to work you need to be connected to the random assessor by Line or whatsapp first to be able to convey your where about right?..

I did not give any advice your advice is good, i only added it would be nice if could be done by line. But your right there are of course many random assessors working and you would need their line ID. Would complicate things though a location send by line would be easier then asking the locals. Because you would have to be sure that they knew how to explain correctly.

But I see the problems of line and having to get an assessors line.

How about a map  screenshot and sending it by email?

You could also sms a link to your google maps location. I was hoping there was already technology in place taking advantage of phone-based gps. It seems like a no-brainer to me. When you're in an accident, you're usually under stress and if there were an easy way to report it would be valuable.

In general, Thais don't seem to have caught on to the concept ofGPS coordinates yet. They'll print a map of their shop's location but forget to mention which town it is in. I have the app 'GPS fix' on my phone that lets me send the coordinates by mail, messaging as well as a few other possibilities.

I'm sorry but I wasn't clear.   When I  mentioned sending a snapshot I was actually  suggesting a Google map screenshot unless there's a better one  available.

Of course it's essential to be within   cell  phone  coverage and hopefully  data as well.     I've been plenty of places in Thailand where neither was available.

When you say "no brainer" and refer to a  Thai  Insurance company you've  hit the weak spot.    They would have to pay a fee to Google to attach their company to  Google for map services.

I think this thread will be finished without fulfillment.       There really is no assured answer I believe.

I think there is no way around.

All the "hightech" stuff seems unreal to me.

Even the not so educated Thai people will at least be able to tell:

which province that is

which amphoe (district) that is

which tambon (subdistrict) that is

what the name of the nearest village/town is

That brings it down quite a bit.

If you are on highway YOU might know which number it is?

You would be very tough if you even knew which was the last milestone (kilometer marker)

On the most advanced roads like parts of motorway 7 there is distance sign every 100 m.

Every 1 km is the norm.

You may wish to trust a bystander--that's a good option I admit.

However, if you are carrying technology that can pinpoint your position within a few meters, it would seem to me a good option--even more reliable than the bystander option.

Your feeling of 'unreality' is not one I share. Many people use this technology to share their locations. It's just a good tool for that job (location sharing), much better than what we had just a few years ago.

I've been in an accident--it's very stressful. Talking to someone in Thai on the insurance hotline is possible for me, but it's not easy. An app where I could just send them my location--that would be much easier. Apparently such a thing doesn't exist for my insurance company--at least for now.

The problem is that Thais don't understand how maps work, so if you send them a link for Google maps (or GPS coordinates) they still won't find you.

You better hope that if you have an accident it's in front of a Central Plaza or Big C.

Very true.

Technically it's so simple to send your position as an SMS to every smartphone with Google maps (multiple apps), but who can read the map?

SMS: works even when offline.

I think you won't get what you want either. Get a set of GPS coordinates. Send it by mail or SMS to your rep. If he isn't intelligent enough to click on the link and be able to navigate to you then he's not much use anyway.

I have the impression you haven't worked out how Google maos works yet, but then most Thais haven't either.

"I have the impression you haven't worked out how Google maos (sic) works yet, but then most Thais haven't either."

What gives you that impression?    I use Google Maps constantly for navigation.    What do you think I'm missing?

If you use Google maps then you should have worked out how to send your coordinates to your rep.

Thanks for that.      I asked the agent at AXA and he suggested I send the snapshot I mentioned.

You seem to  be of  a different opinion.

If you are worried - get yourself a new Toyota or similar - as long as the car electrics are still functioning , my car has some button to send Toyota information in an emergency - I think you can call a helpline etc. - done with GPS.

Trouble is - it is all so complicated- the manual for the info touch screen is 400 pages. Will really have to start understanding it all - there is probably a voice control to report the accident .

MSIG insurance  has an application to download on a smartphone ( msig SpeeDi ) ; they say that it sends your location to the insurance in case of accident

you just have to click on the shortcut ( never tried it )

Have your insurance agents LINE ID contact on your phone. Send him the location

of the accident and have him send it to the insurance adjuster. Send pictures as well.
