Bedridden 5-year-old girl with ALS needs help from public

The Nong Khai governor on Thursday visited a bed-ridden five-year-old girl after learning that she is left under the care of her 69-year-old grandmother.

 

Nong Khai governor Ronachai Jitwiset led officials from the Nong Khai Social Development and Human Security Office and Watcharin Jitwiset, chairwoman of the Nong Khai Red Cross, to visit Pimchanok Parit at her home in Ban Nong Khon village in Tambon Phone Paeng in Nong Khai’s Ratana Wapi district.

 

The governor gave an unspecified amount of money to the girl’s grandmother, Pornsawan Parit, along with some necessities.

 

The girl cannot walk, talk or use either of her arms, and her grandmother said she could eat only instant powdered milk.

 

The grandmother said the girl first developed Amyotrophic Lateral Sclerosis symptoms when she was a-year-and-a-half old. Her parents worked in Bangkok and rarely sent money home, and so the grandma could not afford taking her to see the doctor until her condition had worsened and she became bed-ridden.

 

The grandmother told her visitors that she and the girl now live on an elderly allowance of Bt600 a month and a disability allowance of Bt800 a month. She would welcome public support for diapers and baby food.

 

The governor promised to send medical staff to help the girl perform physical therapy twice a week.

Another example of first rate parenting responsibility! They should be jailed!

What kind of parents just cast their child off like a piece of used toilet paper.  The governor should be going after the useless parents.

I have faith in the Thai in this situation.

 

However,I will be guided by you...

The grandmother is 69 , the girl cannot get out of bed , someone needs the be checking on the GM on a daily basis

A very sad and as  far as I know a very very  rare condition to appear  at such a young age.

I would  be in to  any  made known support attempt.

 

Nice photo op for the Governor and health officials. But nothing like good enough for this desperately sick little girl.

 

The poor mite is not, as the story asserts, "bed-ridden". She sleeps, unhygenically, on the floor. She eats only powdered milk provided by a frail old lady with a big heart but neither the professional skills nor resource to properly care for her.

 

Chucking a few baht and some physio at the situation and inviting the Press along to publicise their Good Samaritan act is unlikely to earn the Governor or the self-important-sounding Nong Khai Social Development and Human Security Office many brownie points.

 

They should have taken one look at the situation and immediately ordered an ambulance to take the unnamed child a decent hospital where she can sleep in a real bed and receive the medical and nursing care she desperately needs.

 

Aren't heartbreakingly awful cases like this exactly what the much-vaunted Thirty Baht Health Scheme, supposedly set up to give virtually free healthcare for all Thais, is meant to be about? And why aren't the girl's parents being brought to book for neglect?

 

Clearly, this little lady needs urgently to be put on a  high-nutrient liquid diet and examined by a specialist to see if her original diagnosis was correct. I have my doubts, as this particular condition normally manifests in middle age or later and is comparatively rare in young children.

 

If she indeed has ASL, the prospects are not bright. But at least the life she has can be more bearable and, with the right help, even enjoyable.

 

Like others on this forum, I would be happy to contribute to any legitimate "rescue" fund.

If you're doing something similar, people will think that continues and they'll rely on those who give something.

 

  Why shouldn't the parents be openly blamed for not taking care of this poor little girl? 

 

  When people started donating money to African countries, ( but also to earthquake victims), they stopped growing crops and were just waiting for the next plane.

 

   The girl needs a special bed, catheters, the right nutrition, and medical specialists who know when it's time to go to a hospital if wounds appear,  and a lot more.

 

  Would an honest foreigner organize that, it might work? But if you're sending money to the grandmom, it might disappear without helping the girl in any way. 

 

  If there's a trustworthy foreigner, I wouldn't mind to help out. But it's not in my interest to finance somebody else's life.

This would be the perfect example to set up a GFM page, but only if there's somebody who's taking care of everything. The parents will do all to get a piece of the cake.

Colin.......... I'm well with you but in Thailand it is worse than many places in the world ..... Wher money is donated for the needy (as this GM and girl) and 2% or maybe 5% of the donated money reaches the GM and girl...........

IS THERE NOT a ThaiVisa member in that area who could be nearby and find these folks and do a GOOD DEED by being a go-between for all us members who want to help but are afraid to because of this being Thailand........ I walk right PAST many 'donation collectors' in front of Department Stores in the US without dropping a coin, But I bring all that money 'Here to Thailand' where I can see where the money is going and KNOW for myself that 100% of my money has been effective........

ThaiVisa has a large membership in Udon and vicinity.... That can't be so far that some TV member couldn't make a day trip there and become 'OUR HERO' on TV.......

In  lieu of  parental  support  and  responsibility anyone  willing  to  subsidise the  inevitable and probable short  term life and living  circumstance of  this  young  person  and  her  ageing dedicated  caregiver are  unlikely   to consider  it  to be of any  self interest either.

In  Thailand   even  if  it  involved   hospitalisation there would  be daily  living  costs .

There  is  no  suggestion  of  supporting a  lifestyle.

There  is  only  the  suggestion  of some support for a short  life.

There  is  no   kudos  in  negating humanitarian concern and effort.

If the  world has now become so harsh then  strip us all of  names  and assign only a temporary  number!

Could you live on 1,400 thb per month for 2 people? That is about 46 thb per DAY.

 

It must be so wonderful to be such a caring person such as you. Obviously you must be rich living in Thailand or you wouldn't be living here.

I see you've been taken in by all the hype. Do you really think the grandmother is the child's only relative? Do you not think the grandmother hasn't got gold or land which she can borrow against? But let us not forget 'grandma said' so it must be the truth.   Does not take a genius to work out that Thais consider lying acceptable when telling the truth.

It must be true grandma said  it. Old woman lived up from me was in the same position. Got the age allowance along with disability for her granddaughter but still worked an 8 hour day in the fields.

Wow..... This reply seems so COLD and HEARTLESS......... Most likely fitting you personally...... From this reply I can tell that you have never 'rubbed elbows' with poor people........... and there are so many of them in this country, Thailand..... There are Thai people both good and bad (same as everywhere)...... Parents run off and find jobs earning just enough to exist and don't look back.......... Forgeting their own sick daughter as in this case...... THERE IS A LOT OF THIS IN THAILAND (It is a pittiful POOR country And the Present Coup is only thinking about how much a few SUBMARINES cost and no Thought about their own People)....... WELL....... There is a lot of US here on ThaiVisa that know many of these 'Poor People' and would hope that there can be a 'ray of hope' in their miserable life......... There is so many of them here and this is just one example that has came before us as a group........

I walk right past Donation collectors in the USA and never drop a 'coin'..... but I come here to Thailand and I come across many 'needy' as this girl and gma and I have a personal pleasure of seeing 'those coins' (and a lot more) going to the needy..... and I have great pride in knowing that 100% of my donations have reached the needy (NOT 2% or 10%).......... The little girl can't use her arms but can be seen here clearly wai-ing. ??? Does grandma look as if she hasn't got 30 Baht to her name?

 

 

 

 

What is required is a holistic solution. This would include :-

 

1. a proper diagnosis and prognosis.

2. a long-term plan of treatment.

3. a long-term plan of the girl's needs. (home, education, etc.)

 

Then, based on these, a better understanding of

1. Where the treatment could be conducted (almost certainly not Amphoe Rattana Wapi, probably not Nong Khai)

2. The technical requirement of the treatment, such as equipment at home.

3. Who would deliver the treatment such as relatives

4. The cost of the treatment

5. Who would pay

6. The probable outcomes

 

Then such a plan could be put into place.

 

The fact that the provincial governor and head of the provincial Red Cross (same surname, wife?, sister?) turned up, donated some cash (unspecified) and some necessities (probably more milk powder!! and some Brand's) and then buggered off after the photo shoot speaks volumes.

 

Chucking money at the problem Bob Geldof style often results in appallingly wasteful outcomes that do not help the person in need at all. What is required is a determined and methodical approach, by the proper authorities first and then, if they fail, which it looks like they have, by somebody who knows what they are doing.

Winning over hearts and minds is a common practice here. Some people fall for it every time.

You don't talk as if these kind of issues 'could possibly' touch your heart in any way..........

It sounds as if you think any situation deserving 'compassion' is a scam..........

I have to admit that Thailand is full of scams, BUT even so..... Half of those scams are coming from outside Thailand aimed at Thais......... The 'other half' of those scams may come from within.............. And they certainly make convenient excuses for some 'Cheap-Charlies' to keep the zipper on their purse closed and blame it all on a 'scam'......... I am still a beleiver and think for every scam there is 10 truly 'desperate-people.......... And I will go to the trouble to try to distinguish them........ It's not that difficult here in Thailand when you have gotten out into Issan and rubbed elbows with those poor folks.........

In your blind-sided mind you have clear 'pictures' of the g'ma having gold and land and other family members of the little having financial ability to help, etc...... Does that picture in your mind give us any hint as to why that little girl 'still remains' in this pitiful situation???????? 

Many TV posters on this thread are aware of scams as you mention....... But many of US are willing to 'unzip' OUR purses and help in varying amounts IF we can find a way to HELP without our help being stolen by middle people (Biggest worry being Gov't officials and also some of her family members)

So, Mr RALLY............ If you can find anything 'Constructive' to say...... IT IS an open forum ........ Jump in here.......... If you are only interested in trying to convert US to being 'Cold and Callous' Cheap Charlies........... then ..... save IT...........

I have just googled for 'CHILD HELP ORG's in Thailand'...... online and what I find is most sites are boldly concentrating on 'getting donations'.......... LOL.........

But some of them after looking far enough I found 'Contact us'........ so I pasted this  message on 5 child help sites::::::::      .......
