Destiny1990
Exactly it would be foolish to ban airbnb in Thailand its so popular in other Asian Countries and it will boost condo sales and boost tourism all together. Surely in needs to be taxed..

At this level you go to a meeting carrying a nice new briefcase and forget to take it with you when you leave.

AsharkY
Since when was it illegal? I thought as long as properties are rented out for more than 30 days it would be the same wether your "agent" is AirBnb or any other Thai firm, as long as you pay your taxes

If the renter is garbage then you can deny them from renting your room. Yaaay technology. ! Have you considered that people simply rent under a different name next week. 1

Sydebolle
You cannot assume that soldiers understand free economic mechanisms. What needs to be understood is that, by now already: AirBnB is the planet's biggest hotel chain without own rooms Grab is the planet's biggest taxi network without own cars and Thailand is either in or out - simple as that! Only once the oligarch families and the little boys in green understand basics of how the economy works they will either adjust to survive or go under as certain developments cannot be stopped. There are more hotel guests than hotels and ......... go figure!

Unless airbnb becomes the governments tax collector why would they allow it. Nobody's shutting down Airbnb. They don't sell or rent anything, they are purely a platform, and a very successful one. Several countries and cities are looking at Airbnb type operations and being proactive rather than just taking the simplistic approach. In Japan, for example, you now need a licence to run a short term rental operation. The Government makes money by both issuing the licence and can follow up for tax payments as they have the relevant details. Airbnb won't register any property that doesn't have the licence. Denmark have requested Airbnb supply details of every letting so that they can collect relevant taxes. Several cities, including New York and Barcelona, require short term letters to be licensed and a few countries and cities even limit the number of days that a property can be let out on a short term basis. Now, being Thailand and as such a country where lateral thinking is not the norm, perhaps we will see a blanket ban but I doubt it very much. The Government can make money out of this if they simply follow the lead of others.

If only the government wasn't run for the benefit of the Elite, who see $$$ being spent in establishments that they don't own. And they can't stand it. It's nice to think it's about tax revenues to benefit the public coffers. But that's not the way a kleptocracy works.

That would take a massive effort. New name. Different credit card or Paypal account. I would say there is a good chance they will use the same account. As long as owners keep up with reviews, it’s much better than just having walk-in customers.
