I had a rotten tooth extracted 10 days ago and still have discomfort. I've had plenty of extractions in the past, and no pain after. To get this one out he had to scrape it down to the bone.

I've had antibiotics and no evidence of infection at present.

Is it normal to have discomfort for so long post extraction, and from personal experience, how long can it last?

Thanks.

10 days and you still have discomfort to the point you posted here on TV.

Have you been back to the dental clinic for a further inspection etc?

Have you considered going to another (licensed) clinic to get a second opinion?

My experience is the periodontist wants to check it about a week after the extraction.

Just takes a peek to see how it's healing.

(No extra charge, included in the extraction price).

A small piece of tooth may not have been removed and is trying to surface.  I had a dentist here break the tooth in pieces to remove it, but they did not do an xray after, to see that pieces remained.

be prepared for a referral to a periodontist

and if they have to incise the gum - it gets really expensive

Upper or lower? Wisdom tooth, molar or front tooth?

Agree with Sheryl as well as those advocating a second opinion. The original dentist isn't going to tell you he screwed up somehow.

Google "dry socket" and see if that matches your situation.

Had one of those in Aus years ago not particularly pleasant but the Dentist treated it with Oil of Cloves an old but good remedy for tooth problems.

Not sure that you could use it for other types of dry sockets !!

Go back to the dentist, or seek a second opinion. Agree - pain should have gone in 2-3 days. Don't leave it too long.

Had the same thing done 6months ago and left with some kind of pain as well i dont think its a piece of tooth left in there but it may be that the jawbone got cracked a little bit because of the pressure that was put on it to pull the tooth just hold on a bit longer the pain will go away it will heal

I had pain for nearly a month after a problem tooth removal and the dentist checked me every week until the pain went after the first week he told me it could take over a month for the pain to completely go

Yes and yes.

Thanks for all the replies.

BTW, a lot of the pain actually comes from a burn on my tongue from anaesthetic that was inadvertently sprayed on it causing an ulcer. I didn't realise before, as seemed to be all in the same place. Once that heals, the situation may be less bad than I thought.

Also, once the swelling went down, the pain localised to the gum of the tooth next to the extraction. If it doesn't resolve in a couple of days I will definitely be going back to get that checked.

My dentist did a follow up x ray to check just that.

Thanks. That's exactly the sort of reply I was hoping for. The dentist says the next tooth is fine, so hopefully the pain I get in the gum below it is going to resolve like yours did. It was a very difficult removal with a lot of pressure applied while scraping the bone.
