Honda did a good attempt with the NSR 400, a V3, over 70 HP as standard and 90HP with some mild fettling, chassis was pretty good too compared to what was in production at the time. Of course Yamaha did the RD500 LC with close to 90HP as standard and Suzuki the RG 500 with even more. Any of these three top notch for Freddie Spencer wantabee's Try and find a decent one of any of these nowadays and you wonder if the price tag is the previous owners telephone number. They are here and are not like Unicorn droppings. In days of yore I alsmost bought a NS400R but sadly....... The NSR 400 does command eye watering money now es'pesh the Rothmans paint job .. seen one in the red , blue and yellow paint down Brighton way yrs ago what struck me was how small it was .. From what I've ever read about 'em their thirst for fuel and oil was spectacular .. Ditto the other two mentioned rare now and expensive .. Next best thing to a Merlin for ordinary folk is the Jag' 5.3 V12 .. originally available in 290 hp carb'd form finishing up 335 hp in Fi 6.0 form when phased out 20 odd yrs ago .. Tuned to the max' early Heron head version capable of shunting out 700+ hp in 7.0 litre form as the XJR9 Le Mans racer demo'd late 80's and with a sound bettered only by the Spit' itself .. Pretty much same engine but retaining the standard 12 lead distributor cap centrally mounted and less curvy swervy exhaust manifolds .. Big fave with power boat racers as it can be extended out to near 8.2 litres with the right throw crankshaft and max' oversize pistons and liners .. Yep, they changed their name from SS to Jaguar in 1945. SS not being too popular a name due to the war. Here's an example of their work, a Swallow Model 4 sidecar attached to a Brough Superior SS80 - SS for Super Sports in this case. There's previously been posts on Edward Turner, Brough Superiors, Jaguars and Merlin engines, and there are links between them all. George Brough worked in his father's motorcycle factory, but left in 1919 to start his own company, because his father wouldn't allow him to make high performance bikes. He named his range "Brough Superior", which may have been a dig at his father's factory. His father didn't take it too well anyway. He died in 1970. William Lyons was one of the founders of the Swallow Sidecar Company, later becoming Jaguar Cars Limited. He owned a number of bikes, including Brough Superiors, and that brand became the preferred one for attaching his sidecars to. Brough was reportedly not too happy at the SS name being used by Lyons - his own bikes were designated SS for Super Sport, but they later became friends, and he owned a number of Jaguar cars. In 1960, Jaguar bought Daimler from BSA, bringing Edward Turner into the story. Turner had designed the Daimler Hemi head 2.5 and 4.5 Litre V8s, and, even though no longer part of the company that owned it, was still heavily involved in its development under Jaguar. Apparently, he and Lyons did not enjoy a good relationship, but he had great admiration for the Daimler team "The Daimler engineers were the most remarkable I have ever worked with - the finest bunch of design engineers I've ever had the joy to command". The Merlin engine was of course made by Rolls Royce. Brough Superiors were called the Rolls Royce of motorcycles, and the SS Jaguars the 'poor mans Rolls Royce'. Edward Turner used an alloy developed by Rolls Royce - Hiduminium RR56, for the connecting rods and bearings in his first Triumph twin engines in 1937, being the first person to do so and giving a big advantage over steel components. Daimler's V8 was an absolute jewel of an engine beloved in many disciplines of Motorsport right upto historic drag racing .. All'y hemi heads in the mid 50's when a lot of car makers were still happy with cast iron sidevalve lumps .. 4.5 is even rarer than 2.5 having only been fitted in the 420 limo' and is highly highly prized .. This engine in 2.5 or 4.5 always looks good with everything in proportion and correct angle Vee .. One in photo whooped up a bit with 4 downdraught's .. Engine pic' was the original lump as in two flat twins atop one another but it was pony by all account's so they redesigned it as a conventional flat 4 .. Look at the all in one engine block with sump at the bottom .! And the block height above the crank line suggests its a slower-revving long stroke = goodly amount of low down torque .. No neutral, high beam, indicator garbage. Liquid filled OPG off to the left just aft of the headstock. L/H sidepanel... DK 350 V3 stroker racer from mid 50's .. reckoned to put out 55 hp which isn't bad for the day .. DK supercharged stroker late'ish 50's with better pic's of the odd piston setup .. This thing absolutely howls .. DKW became part of Auto Union mid'dish 30's along with Horch and Wanderer in the same sort of consolidations that were going thru,' the British motor industry .. A U then bankrolled DK's 2 stroke development making them one of the leading pioneers of 2 stroke engineering as part of the regeneration of German Industry promoted by Herr Hitler .. Part of that promotion was Auto Union doing battle with Mercedes as to just who made the best race car in the world as a showcase for German motor Engineering which is where the bottom two pic's come in .. 1937 Auto Union 6.0 litre V16 with Root's type supercharger which had to be bevel gear driven as it ran at 90° to the crank .. Check out the size of the carbs just beneath the hand at the top of the shot ..
