That may be a widowmaker, but this is The Widowmaker. E.J Potter's 1971 Widowmaker 7. The last V8 Chevy powered drag bike he built. The first three were called Bloody Mary, then he got married, and the next 4 were called Widowmaker. This one's fastest pass was 8.68 sec at 172 mph. It has a direct chain drive, and launching it was different, and interesting, to say the least. With the rear wheel suspended by a stand, Potter would bring the engine to roughly 6,000 RPM. Then he’d rock the bike off the stand, and when the spinning wheel hit pavement, hold on for dear life, smoking the tyre the entire length of the drag strip. Rear tyres would only last for three runs before replacement was necessary. My kind of bike.

Bill Lacey, the man who later prepared Mike Hailwood's legendary Manx Norton in the 50s, set a number of 500cc records on the bike, including being the first man to cover 100 miles in an hour on a British track, and culminating with a world record average speed of 105.9mph over a 60 minute run in 1929. Six replicas were produced for public sale, and each one came with a certificate guaranteeing that Lacey had personally lapped Brooklands at 100mph on that bike. It's thought that only two survive. Imagine finding one, with the certificate still intact.

Popular Post Justgrazing
No it hasn't been photshopped this was for real and was the last piston engined plane commissioned by the U S during WW2 .. The 2 pilot P82 designed by the NAA Corp who built the P51 ( hence the fuselage similarities ) on the drawing boards from 1942 with a brief of being able to escort US B29 Bombers from the Solomon Isle's or Philippines on their way to mainland Japan .. Twin Packard built Merlin's that had to run in opposite rotation .. first prototype test they found it struggled dangerously to take off as the prop's it was later discovered were rotating the wrong way negating lift over the central wing span by the drag created beneath it .. Swapping the engines wing for wing they found it would take off with ease but required quite precise engine synching .. Six .50 Cal's were fitted within the central wing section to give more focused intense firepower .. some were also tried with an additional four .50's to each wing and some were fitted with 37mm auto cannons to the wings .. either way it was a fearsome plane that was starting to be produced in numbers for it's chosen task when the U S decided to get it over in a flash so to speak .. Some do still exist in aviation museums and possibly on the Warbird display circuit .. Interesting old plane though ..
