Its not like they are not working on the airline and there are hundreds of people there helping, I expect they can also lay a fibre optic, which would not be about making a live show but about getting them in communication with their families to lift their spirits, something that could make all the difference at this stage.

I think it would just upset them. They really need to conserve their air and energy.

I can't imagine the Thai government being able to pay for all that. Nowhere in the text does he say he's offering it for free.

Of course it is free, the US tax payer has been consuming Tesla's bills for years, I think to the amount of 4,9 BILLION Dollar so far

Well, they have a psychiatrist on site who specialises in these types of trauma, they will be able to make a better judgement than either of us.

Just say yes so they can send the equipment within a couple of days, time is precious .

Musk suggests tube network

By The Nation

SpaceX engineers flying to Thailand to explore possibilities; the death of an ex navy seal dampens enthusiasm to let the stranded 13 dive out

Alternative ways to evacuate the 12 stranded boys and their football coach from the Tham Luang cave have emerged, including one suggested by US entrepreneur and tech expert Elon Musk.

In a series of tweets, Musk said engineers from his SpaceX and Boring companies are heading to Thailand to see if they can help Thai authorities, especially in view of the complexities involved in this unique rescue situation.

Earlier, Thai authorities had planned to have all the 13 dive out of the cave, but the death of a former Thai Navy SEAL member early yesterday appears to have made planners reconsider their options.

Given the unprecedented challenge in this rescue effort, Musk said in one of his tweets that it maybe worth trying to build a one-metre-wide nylon tube network with a shorter set of tubes in the most difficult sections and then inflate the tubes with air to create something like a bouncy castle to transport the boys out of the cave.

The underwater air tunnel can be installed against the cave roof and can auto-conform to odd shapes like a 70cm hole, Musk wrote in his tweet in response to @JamesWorldSpace.

Bloomberg also reported that Musk’s representatives are discussing with Thai authorities on how they could help.

Musk’s SpaceX company has developed world-class technologies for space activities, while other companies founded by the US billionaire have built heavy-duty batteries for Tesla electric cars and other uses, as well as cutting-edge earth-drilling and boring machinery.

In addition, one of his companies reportedly has the technology for precision tracking to locate the area where the boys have been stranded for over a fortnight.

Chaiyaporn Siripornpaiboon, a cave expert at the Department of Mineral Resources, told The Nation that the cave’s floodwater level has become the most crucial factor in determining which option would be the most appropriate to rescue the stranded footballers.

The latest data shows that the most challenging section for the boys to dive out is about 200 metres long, next to the so-called Pattaya Beach where the floodwater is estimated to be 5-10 metres deep.

His comment came after a former Navy SEAL became the first fatality and revealed the dangers of trying to have the stranded boys dive out.

Chaiyaporn said he would prefer to see the floodwater subside to a much lower level to enable the boys to get out safely, but that chance was relatively low as the rainy season has only started.

Another option is to continue exploring for a natural cave shaft through which the boys could be airlifted so that they could avoid diving. So far, explorers have not been successful with this option.

Thanasarn Narue-sataporn, a medical doctor with experience in rescuing people hit by natural disasters, including the last Nepal earthquake, said the cave’s floodwater level is most crucial so authorities have to closely watch the situation around the clock and make their rescue decision in a timely manner.

He said the Tham Luang challenge is unique – unlike any other rescue effort around the world – especially in terms of the number of young people trapped inside a complicated cave network.

In similar cases in Germany or France, only a small number of adult caving experts or trekkers were trapped, but in the Thai case they are boys aged between 11 to 16 and their 25-year-old coach.

While a huge amount of water has been pumped out over the past several days, the cave’s floodwater level remains high due to the area’s mountainous nature.

Authorities are worried about a worst-case scenario where heavy downpour for an extended period in the area could lead to complete flooding inside the cave, including the area currently occupied by the boys and more than 10 Navy SEAL members.

Dr Suttisak Soralump of Kasetsart University said earlier that the Tham Luang challenge is also much more difficult than the 2010 Chilean mine collapse in terms of the attempt to drill the cave to rescue those trapped inside.

In the Chilean case, 33 miners were trapped underground for 69 days but all survived. Suttisak said the Tham Luang cave being totally natural, there is not enough geological data for engineers to work out a solution.

In the Chilean mine case, the site was fully explored prior to the collapse with a lot of data available for rescuers to design their options to get the miners out safely.

Elon Musk, that's name that wafts around quite a bit, buddies with other billionaires such as Elongates I hear. Why doesn't he come over with his musketeers and see what he can do.

Buddies with elongates, is there a joke in there?  I am sorry if I am slow but I don't get it!

rolling out this tubing plan might work, but the inflation pressure, to counter the water pressure

 - might make for an interesting equation

either way, it'd be the world's largest ever Stent membrane

I expect it would be for free, it would be very odd to contact them otherwise.

I also expect the help to be free but if not the Thai can pay for it very well.....i know a Thai with 30 billion us$ and plenty others with a billion or more...It's not that there's no money at all imo.

first you would have to locate where the boys are.  a transponder would not work through the rock nor would present x-ray tech. a gps signal would be of no use.  a dead reckoning device like INS could possibliy work and would have to be carried to the target from the inside.   used this before GPS came onboard.  you set up your initial fix at the departure gate prior to taxi and than a gyro would update the course. with this data they could locate a drilling fix from the outside or just double the effort to find a entry point.  lots of rock, and boring machines are cumbersome to place especially in this terrain. and again you would need accurate target data. the children heard a rooster and children.  talk to the locals and find out where children where playing.  i hope this ends well.

That idea was thought by many people and am one of them ,however, I was told the narrow gaps won't allow it but I thought they can break parts to widen the gap if it won't collapse.just a thought.hoping for a real happy ending ?

I would have thought getting oxygen line to them was more important than Internet but communication may keep their spirits up... Facebook too

/sarcasm on

Yeah, lets get them internet access so they can read and respond to all the negative trolls that say they're gonna die, that will keep their spirits up.  Maybe they can watch a live-stream of the SEAL that died bringing them oxygen tanks, too.

There are more missing people in the sea than there are in the cave, so yes you are wrong.

So what good does the news do to those who are missing? There is a standard procedure on how to search for missing persons on the sea. It happened before and will happen again. Those boys trapped is one of a kind, it is food for the news media and thus more important. None of the lives is more important, not the boys, nor the missing people on the sea. But there is another kind of solution needed in saving the boys and to get them out is not just like throwing a lifebelt or fishing them from an ocean. I do understand that it needs more thought and it needs good ideas. Such attention might help. If you consider, meanwhile on the Thai roads, without doubt, more people died in the past month then due to the cave rescuing or people drowned at sea. Does the news cover that???

Did you read what he is offering.

My building contracter says that all the time.

Build first let's talk about cost later.

Fool me once.

You are funny sanemax.

Yep, and you are even more funny. After so many people already comment and understand that he offers help for free, it just looks like you are the only one left to grasp that last little line of sense.
It will not be any costs included for the government.

I think at this stage , they should prepare a better living environment for the boys , it could take several weeks , maybe months , give them new clothes , bring in clean water so they can wash themselves.  The latest video released showed them in old clothes .   Even bring something they can sleep more comfortable in .

Yes I know some people are worried everything can get flooded even where they stay now , but they are still pumping out water so they should be able to keep them there , with more oxygen .

I'm not clear on how much room there is on that shelf they're on, one thing I read made it sound like there wasn't even enough room for them to all stretch out and lie down or move around, only enough to sit down in place.

But I agree, they need to concentrate on habitability of their current situation. Maybe they have been putting most of their effort so far just into getting them air, food and first aid. Those things obviously have to come first.

On the pumping out water thing, yes as big rains are definitely coming sooner or later, if they are stay in place, they're going to need stronger pumps. The thing is as I've posted about on another thread, with the type of porous rock that cave is made of, water doesn't just flow in from outside, it flows in from below and around!

God Bless you Elon Musk for offering assistance. And God please forgive the pitiful poor losers here that have no financial gain or loss in effort to save lives, but can only focus on money.

The Boring company approach is interesting and could be feasible especially if closely coordinated with high volume pumping to reduce the head pressure. It could be dangerous however if there was any tearing of the tube which could then

flood the chamber and there would be no escape. The drilling technique also faces head pressure challenges if fluid based drilling techniques are used. This is not a problem with easy solutions!

I've been wondering if they have the best water pumps in the world for the job or just the water pumps they had handy. By now I think they could have poured a concrete platform outside and flown in and mounted some pretty serious pumps if that would have helped. Maybe the hoses are a limitation?

I tried to do a web search, but when I put "really big water pumps" into bing it gave me a bunch of penis enlargement links.... ?

Show me in writing.

What was he doing talking to the government about it.

He didn't say it was free.

The Mexican government paid for his services.

Why would this be any different?

As you already know, there is nothing to show yet, but most people believe different than you. I just use common sense. If he is a billionarie, he will understand that he is getting a commercial of a greater value than he loose anyway.
