Brexit Secretary David Davis resigns

Brexit Secretary David Davis has resigned from the UK government.

His resignation comes days after Theresa May secured the cabinet's backing for her Brexit plan despite claims from Brexiteers that it was too "soft".

Mr Davis was appointed Brexit secretary in 2016 and was responsible for negotiating the UK withdrawal from the EU.

Hurray! At least there is one person that understands, one has to leave the sinking ship before it hits rock bottom. :cheesy:

Let´s just hope he doesn´t have an expensive life vest too, so that there will be more to pay for the BG.

Yes, it seems to be many in the BG that have been provided with a hammer and knows exactly how to use it.

Let the circular firing squad proceed with their action.

Well, as I understand it, hammers were designed for building things, not breaking them. But that requires more skill.

Does anyone know if David Davis wrote a resignation letter? It'd be the first document he's produced in the last two years.

Davis escapes from a Brexit he know cannot be delivered.

He’ll go into hiding, like his pal Farage.

You do not know this, the present form of Brexit is not tenable, neither is Mays position as PM.

May will be toppled and a brexiteer installed to replace the weak May, as a remainer yourself can't you see what great news this is for all leavers?

Are you not worried that some of the gloating remainers on here may end up laughing on the other side of their faces.

How can that possibly happen when the majority of Tory MPs are in favour of a soft Brexit? Toppling May might be great as she is pathetically ineffective, but the most likely outcome of that would be Brexit suspended and another Election.

Please leave off the accusations of Remainers ‘gloating’.

The only benefit Brexit has delivered to those who voted for it is a couple of years gloating.

Whether the majority of Tory in favour of a soft brexit is immaterial, it doesn't mean that they will back her white paper does it, have they even read it yet. Theres a good chance the  EU won't agree, if they do will Labour agree to it. As far as I am aware it only takes 48 MP letters of no confidence to the 1922 committee to agree to another leadership challange and who in their right mind could possibly have confidence in May.

What other politician with any nous would want the Brexit poisoned chalice and potential ruin of their political career?

Vote it down and get TM out. We need a LEAVE voting PM with vision to take us out of the EU.

I think at this difficult time it's a case of 'needs must' now we all know what a pathetic job May is doing somebody will have to accept the "poisened chalice"

Then you are more optimistic than I. This is not the era of Churchill, this is the era of self-serving snollygosters like Boris Johnson. They don't care about their country, only themselves and their interests.

Frankly we could do worse. We are, in fact, in my opinion.

The problem is, whoever gets the PM job has a great deal more on their plate than just Brexit.

Your royal ‘we’ is I presume coming from Thailand.

What the vast majority of people in the U.K. want is a job, a thriving economy and tax revenues to pay for healthcare, welfare, pensions, schools and the whole spectrum of society’s institutions.

It’s a bit of a balancing act.

No PM acting in the interests of the nation is going to risk the economy for Brexit.
