I think the mini-sub is brilliant, and bear in mind conditions in the cave can rapidly change at any time due to heavy rainfall. Only the people actually doing the rescuing would be in a position to assess the risks. 2

It may be a brilliant piece of equipment in a year after numerous refinements, checks, tests etc etc. It will not and should not be even being considered as a viable option in this rescue, something i am sure Elon and his team are well aware of that.

I would hazard a guess that the simple human contact between the divers and the kids has played a very big part in this. A squeeze of the hand, touch on the shoulder and if visibility is good enough a big grin works wonders.

You missed the point about changing conditions - i.e. flooding of tunnels that were dry yesterday and much stronger currents. What worked yesterday may not work today, or tomorrow. At the very least, what was reasonably safe yesterday may be very dangerous today. 1

Popular Post simon43
While this mini-sub may not be required for this rescue, it makes absolute sense to leave it at the cave. Experienced divers could then test it out at a later date, see if it's a viable rescue system, modify it etc with EM's technical help, and then have a practical rescue system that could be used in future rescues (wherever they might occur in the world). 6
keeniau96
Good intention but having done cave diving it would not be useful in tight curved places. Good intentions but little value.
Popular Post zaphod reborn
I think this would have been useful if the conditions made cave diving no longer the most reliable option. It isn't over, as 5 more still need to be rescued. The rain was not as severe as expected today, so best of luck to them in attempting the final extraction. No one should disparage Musk, because his option may have been the better one, had weather conditions been much worse. 1
balo
This is just crazy. Leave the boys and the divers alone and go back to Australia in your private jet and invent stuff. Too late and not enough tests..

I can't see a lot of gratuitous self-promotion here. Katipo
Nice they he popped on over. Raising the international profile of such tragedies will hopefully push the authorities into taking action to prevent more. I'd love to know what measures were in place to make people aware or prevent the altogether from going into a cave which has a well known annual flooding problem. Getting back to musk. We all knew their wasn't enough space to fit such a contraption through the tighter tunnel spaces, so there is no reason to think he didn't as well. Kind of makes his efforts seem superfluous. Popular Post DrTuner
Musk is the kind of fella that gets shit done. Was surprised to learn some Americans don't like him. Luckily he's not a yankee himself so who cares. 2
Popular Post JAZZDOG
Some very revealing comments from a group that collectively have put forth ZERO efforts toward rescuing these kids. Thanks for people like EM who put their money and expertise to work to help people as opposed to just blowing smoke on here attempting to up their community reputation numbers. You know who you are and you should be ashamed. 2 1
monkfish
Ahah he stole my idea! At that time experts were recommending not diving as it was too dangerous. 1

Or is it all a bit of good PR. In showing his willingness to stand behind his tech i suggest that Elon volunteer to test the protoype before the kids in the cave go in it. If its not ready, what is the point in him being here and delivering it? And stated it loud and clear that the Thai government requested him to do it! Popular Post chivo
In a situation as threatening as this, it is wise to have as many back-up plans in place as possible. If one kid can’t dive for some reason, (passes out, panics...) the sub is there in case. Smart. Thoughtful. Generous. Yes the divers are doing an amazing kick-ass job. And their plan should be followed first. But this is great of Elon Musk. Think positive. 3

connda
No need for guinea pigs considering that they have a tried and true extraction method. However, for future reference, perhaps the Thai government should issue him a permit to test the sub in the cave labyrinth afterwards should future rescues in other caves be necessary. Doubt if we'll see this fiasco at Tham Luang again.

However what about other billionaires like Bill Gates, Tim Cook, Warren B, Paul Allen, Richard Branson etc.? Nobody ever tried to help or step-in from that group of people. IamNoone88
Musk got great global PR exposure worth millions for latching onto the real heroes in this rescue - who quietly got on with the job with absolute composure and hardly a Tweet.
Popular Post cardinalblue
These are the weakest kids going out today.... one panic attack can lead to disastrous consequences... need to assess kids and their abilities.... not so far fetched....definitely could be used in a variety of underwater confined space scenarios in the future... disaster leads to an invention...hats off to him for coming up with idea....that's why he is who he is and the rest are on message boards.. invention and creativity at its best....he didn't do it for PR reasons....you think he needs PR? Get serious.... Edited July 10, 2018 by cardinalblue 2 1
