Thinners/Turps-your thoughts

Featured Replies

Barco; DEMA; Turbo; TOA,  You may recognise these as being brands of thinners/turps.

I tend to rotate this group as I find them all about the same price, all about the same poor quality and all evaporate in an exceedingly quick time, making thinners more expensive than paint i.m.o.

I remember you could buy turpentine for cleaning your brushes in the uk and you would fill a jamjar. a week later the jar would still be full and the paint settled at the bottom.

No doubt the heat here excites those molecules of evapouration quicker but really none of the above products can sustain a life of more than 10 minutes even as a paint thinner.

Do you have similar observations?

It looks as if you are confusing thinners, usually AAA, and turpentine, they are both available the turps is quite a bit more expensive than AAA.

T AAA needs a sealed glass container to hang around. I don't usually bother with turps due to the cost so don't know if it has the same problem or any benefit.

i also sometimes put the AAA in a couple of food bags to slow down the evacuation.

Madam insists I buy the stuff labelled as turpentine because "it's better", it does seem to hang around in the jar rather longer than "thinner".

But it still goes away much quicker than it would in the UK even in our relatively cool, shaded, shed.

"I don't want to know why you can't. I want to know how you can!"

AAA and Turpentine are different and used for different things. AAA is more volatile and evaporates quickly. Turpentine is more organic and evaporates slower. Both OK for cleaning the compatible paint from brushes if kept in a jar with a tight seal.

I use an empty Nestea jar which is just short of a paint brush and a few cm of TOA XXX.  The loose cap prevents evaporation while the brush soaks and will save indefinitely screwed on.

Just to correct - I wanted to say "AAA" not "XXX" in my post above.
