BANGKOK — During a visit to the northeastern province of Ubon Ratchathani, the interim cabinet of Gen. Prayuth Chan-ocha approved spending over 2 billion baht to expand the airport there and endorsed other projects, an aviation official said Tuesday.

After meeting to discuss the social and economic development of the lower northeast region, Daroon Seangchai of the Airports Department said the airport there was one of several airport development projects the cabinet has agreed to support.

Hmmm... this sounds awfully populist to me.

Now, if we could just get a list of the names of the owners of the land that surrounds the current airports and the list for the land for the new airports.

That would be interesting! Bet there are lots of maids and drivers who own all that land.

Money better spent @ 500 Baht a head when elections eventually take place.

I can't comment on the need for airports or not, so I'll leave that one.

However, I do have a question. Where are all these billions of spending coming from? I have seen sooooooo many spending announcements in Issan that I cannot even begin to put a number on them.

Where exactly is the money coming from?

I foresee tremendous disappointment after the election (if/when it happens) when all of these projects are cancelled or cut back to the point of being nothing at all.

It looks to me like the people of Isaan are being hit with the proverbial 'forked-tongue' of lies. I hope they realize it in time...

Like all the promises made by the various Thaksin governments you mean?

Looking around Isan, billions' worth of work on roads, rail and airports going on, which is quite refreshing after the years of standstill before this government.

If even the dumbest Thais can't see what's going on, then they deserve the government they get.

We came back to Udon on Monday, there's a new Customs area; guess they'll be International flights soon.

The new car park still isn't being used, dunno why though.

They announced a big expansion of Khon Khen airport with a new terminal etc. All that's happened in the couple of years since is a short and incomplete added taxiway. Big talk, no action.

New hospital in Sangkha

Lot of highway work going on

Hope they can upgrade and re-ooen Surin airport to passenger status.

All going pretty well from what I can see.

Sod expanding Ubon airport!

I hear all the roads down Buriram/Surin are great now too.

How about fixing the country roads up here in Udon?

Never seen them ever in such a state of pot holed disrepair.

There's a new footbridge outside the school on the main road in Naklang.

But yea, repairing some of the pot holes'd be useful.
