Police will strictly enforce the ban on liquor and beer sales on Asanha Bucha (July 27) and Buddhist Lent, Royal Thai Police deputy spokesman Pol Col Krissana Pattanacharoen said.

He said Police Commissioner General Pol Gen Chakthip Chaijinda had instructed chiefs of the nine provincial bureaux and Metropolitan Police Bureau to be strict about the ban on Friday and Saturday.

Although Thailand is a secular society, the sale of alcoholic drinks is banned at department stores, convenience stores and entertainment venues on Buddhist national holidays.

The ban goes onto effect at 12.01am on Friday and remains in place through midnight Sunday.

Krissana said restaurants, karaoke shops, bus terminals and railway stations would be randomly checked on both days and retailers and proprietors of entertainment venues had been reminded of the ban.

The only exemption is at airport duty-free shops, he said.

I wonder if you can still take you own alcohol to a restaurant etc. Most restaurants around here will not sell alcohol under the restrictions but they will allow you to bring your own and they will serve it for you.

NEVER! Alcohol in public is forbidden. (And nobody can tell, whether you brought "from outside" or not.)

"they will serve it for you"  -- The coffee-cup serving is illegal too.

Thailand is a secular society? Not really.  Brainwashed and superstitious? YES.

Let's hope phi krasue, phi phop, phi phai and the other million ghosts don't take this personal, otherwise hell may break loose.

Secularism seeks to ensure and protect freedom of religious belief and practice for all citizens.

Erm, so Thailand can hardly be regarded as secular...

It’s not like alcohol

is exclusive to Thailand only. Surely tourist can manage 2 days without alcohol and in worse case scenario can always drink from hotel mini bar, though admittedly price would be little more than 7-11, so can only hope extra $1 on a bottle of beer will not break their budget and ruin the holiday
