Rescue services in the area of Mae Raem in the Doi Suthep - Pui national park were called after flash floods hit the area.

Tourists were evacuated but two Portuguese ladies were caught on rocks at Level 4 of Mae Sa waterfall and had to be rescued using a "cable-way" or rope system.

Benedita Feron, 21, and Leonor Feron, 25, later met the Chiang Mai governor Suphachai Iam-suwan who was on hand to provide extra assistance to the rescuers.

Park authorities ordered the temporary closure of the area around the Mae Sa waterfall at 6pm.

Heavy rain had hit the area in the afternoon on Friday, reported INN.

It was not reported when the area was likely to be reopened.

Looking at the picture and judging where they are, they did not need any assistance and could have hopped easily on over and out.. Maybe they were told: Stay there, we need to get he governor here for a photo op first.

Will these 2 be offered Thai citizenship or will they have to be ordained first?

colin, they need to use elon musks submarine for this rescue in 3 feet of water. they can make a special oxygen tube to keep the victims under water during the rescue.

Keeping up with the Joneses. Couldn’t think of a proper Thai last name to switch in.

There was a fear, at one point, that they might have to stay on the rock for up to 3 months until water levels dropped enough to complete the rescue !!!

Closed after the rescue. A little proactivity would have had it closed before a rescue was necessary.
