Police, troops and Interior Ministry officials joined forces to raid two pubs near a university in Chiang Mai for allowing underage patrons to enter.

The first raid was carried out at 11.30pm at the Pen Tor pub, located some 300 metres away from the Maejo University in Chiang Mai's Sansai district.

The authorities found 45 customers under the legal drinking age of 20.

The authorities the moved on to the Safe House pub nearby and found four patrons under 20.

The managers of the two pubs were arrested and charged with selling alcoholic drinks to underage people.

The officials will ask the provincial administration to close the two pubs for five years, as they have both faced similar charges on several previous occasions.

The Pen Tor manger has been identified as Naruemit Rodphra and Safe House manager as Janyawan Muangmala.

big deal. i bet most of those they arrested were students around 18/19 anyway

Yep it is a big deal. It has to do with following laws and rules. Something that must be done something about in this country. Good work from the police.

Okey, and the younger they are, the lesser amount of common sense do they have. There we come to the traffic laws, dear Happy. What about a drunk 17 year old that causes an accident involving 4 innocent victims that had to die, just because you choosed that part of the law wad irrelevant? And that´s just one example. Everything can be connected, and therefore it´s important to abide the law in all areas. I am curious of your response to that?

the younger they are the lesser amount of common sense. disagree with that completely TBH

of course the drunk 17 year old would and should be prosecuted but who said they were in a pub before the accident and not drinking at home and who says any of the people in the pub were going to drive?

best to concentrate on the roads then or check people getting into cars coming out of pubs not people just chilling have a few drinks with friends.

in the UK the law used to be that you can drink in a pub at 16 if with an adult and having a meal. i am told partly the idea was to teach young people to drink responsibly in a safe environment not out on the streets or in some abandoned building.

Unlike these pointless raids here which are most likely because some cops were told to intimidate some pubs coz they weren't paying them enough.

Sure they can sit home and drink, but if you eliminate the ones that are underaged sitting drinking in bars, you will eliminate a part of the problem. Every piece is a part som still, you can´t choose like you regarding what should be important or not. Just admitt that you put yourself in a position you can´t get out of this time.

Good work from the police to arrest 17 to 19 year olds for drinking some beers??? I think the actual problem was that somebody didn't receive his brown envelop in time!

In stead, the police should better spend their time with enforcing traffic laws to reduce the 60+ DAILY deaths.

The places will open again with 'new' owners soon enough. Or what? The places are boarded up and left to decay?

In Thailand it is the property that loses the licence to sell alcohol, not the manager or owner. This stops the practice of family or friends fronting the bar. So these will have to be re-opened as something else for 5 years...........maybe a massage parlour......:whistling:

So what was  the minimum distance from educational establishments actually set at in the new laws a year or so ago?

Wow! Another in the brown envelope club. I am touched. Just no more discussion needed.

One of those strange laws the same as in the US. You can serve/fight /die in military service but you are too young to drink. Oh well, that is just the way it is.
