A Songkhla man was arrested in Saraburi on Wednesday morning after police at a checkpoint found 154,000 meth amphetamine pills and 10 kilogrammes of crystal meth hidden in his pickup truck.

When police in front of the station at Tambon Huay Khamin in Nong Kae district waved down the pickup for a routine stop, the front-seat passenger opened his door and fled into roadside undergrowth.

Officers then searched the pickup and found the the hidden drugs.

The driver, Patcharapol Wichitwathee, 48, from Songkhla, was promptly arrested.

Patcharapol said he had suffered financially working as a coconut vendor in Chumphon, before a friend introduced him to a drug boss he knew only as Daeng. He said Daeng offered him Bt200,000 to smuggle the narcotics from Lop Buri to Chumphon.

He said two men took his pickup to load the drugs somewhere in Lop Buri on Tuesday night before he drove the shipment back towards Chumphon.
