A van driver was killed and his eight passengers were severely injured in Nakhon Ratchasima early on Monday when the vehicle swerved off the road and flipped.

Pak Thong Chai district police were called to the scene on Highway 24 in Tambon Takhu at 4.54am.

Rescuers using metal cutters freed the passengers trapped inside and removed the body of driver Sansern Sirikamnerd, 37.

At press time, police had been unable to interview the survivors about what happened.

I am very interested in how many of all traffic deaths go into the account of these vans resp. the morons
behind their steering wheels. From my feeling in daily traffic it must be at least 20% since motorcycles account
 for about 40%.

A commonly quoted figure is 73% of deaths attributed to accidents on Thailands roads are motorcyclists.

You're right.
My memory let me down ...
And indeed the comparison of vehicles makes more sense because every vehicle has only one driver.

" a breakdown of this 13% would be extremely informative."
This is what I meant.

it would be interesting to see a breakdown of accidents / fatalities at night vs daytime....

I vaguely remember a remark in some article saying it is three times as many during the dark than at daylight.

Others stats: 2% cyclists, 2% heavy trucks and an astonishing 8% pedestrians.

A couple years ago in Mae Jo Chiang Mai where I live a uni teacher crossing the street about 100 meters from a police box got hit and killed by a "big bike". The posted speed limit is 90k/hour AND 50k/hour depending on the sign you prefer (this being a road on abutting the university mind you) and the bike was no doubt racing in-between cars.  After the teacher waited for the car to pass and crossed the bike came out from behind a moving car and struck him (not sure the gender).

This was a totally predictably and avoidable outcome but according to the Thais I should just calm down because what can we do anyways? Sad state of affairs in Thailand. I have no hope for these idiots making the streets safe.

Another one where it is the van's fault for swerving off the road.   This time the van killed the driver.

Indeed , another minibus with a bad attitude. 44.5 am , the really bad ones only come out at night.
